Seeking advice: Asellus sp.(Aquatic Isopod) & Mystery snails in 5gallon Posted: 14 Oct 2021 04:37 PM PDT Hello! I have been running a 5 gallon tank with only snail/plant residents for a while now. Was seeded & cycled before throwing in the snails. I change 15-25% of water weekly, parameters all scoring consistently. Aquarium also has copepods intentionally, because my partner loves them. This is my first planted tank, so hopefully I'm not making massive mistakes so far… I got a lot of bad advice from a LFS so I won't be returning to them ("here's 5 free mystery snails to put in your 5 gallon! It'll be fine you'll just have to change the water often when they grow up") My plants are growing alright (except one crypt who is on week 2 of temper tantrum after being replanted). I'm trying to figure out if it will be ok to have two mystery snails + some Asellus, or if I should parse down to one snail. Reasons for two snails: - Aqua pods eat snail poop, and are apparently very hungry, so they might be able to handle the sheer shititude of 2 mystery snails - Snails are cute - cope with emotional distress of if one of the snails die Reasons against two snails: - too many poop, unstable water parameters with addition of aquatic isopods - mystery snail requires a lot of space, I don't want to provide an insufficient home - bad water quality will kill two snails, resulting in no snails Anyone have experience with this set up structure? I know some people say shrimp add almost nothing to bioload, but are extremely sensitive, whereas aquatic isopods are much less sensitive, and probably also have a low bioload addition? But I don't want to put them in a stressful environment…. Soo… Looking forward to your knowledge! [link] [comments] |
