AIO Chaeto

Posted: 09 Jun 2021 06:01 AM PDT

Is anyone growing chaeto in the back of their AIO? I have 20g Waterbox Cube and was considering growing chaeto in the back of it. What are you all's experiences with this?

How many ai primes over a 5 ft tank?

Posted: 09 Jun 2021 03:07 AM PDT

Would just two spread out be ok? I am going to start off with a fish only and when I get more money for dosers and an auto top off then I'll ad coral. So would the light distribution look insanely weird or will it be ok? I don't mind a little difference in the tanks light distribution to much

And when I do want coral, can I just start by keeping it only where the main lights are?

Was headed to bed last night and found a crab riding a large snail. This was 1' above the substrate, so he mustve been on there for a while

What do do with tanks during termite tenting?

Posted: 08 Jun 2021 09:05 PM PDT

The house I rent is getting tented for termites in early July, and I'm not sure what to do with our tanks. We have 5 tanks total, all under 20 gallons fully stocked, as well as like 30 house plants, that will all need to be moved. Does anyone have any experience on what to do with them during the 2-3 days?

Is a powerhead necessary on a 25G tank?

Posted: 08 Jun 2021 04:27 PM PDT

I bought a WB Peninsula Mini 25G. I was looking at powerheads, but was wondering if an upgraded return pump would be sufficient instead. This is my first reef tank, so I am not sure if that would be adequate or if a powerhead is pretty much necessary. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Call the Tang Police or Ministry of Fishy Business cause I killed my fish with a DIY Project!

Posted: 08 Jun 2021 11:43 AM PDT

I write this as a warning to future DIY'rs!

So I started a tank last August, since then I've been slowly adding fish and corals to my tank. This the first new reef tank I've done since getting out of the hobby 15 years ago. I noticed my LFS would show me corals using a UV light to get the colors to pop. So I thought I would build a UV light system to do the same thing.

After some research(this is relevant) I landed on making my own "UV" light bar. Since I'm a DIY'r I decided to build my tank to work strictly on a 24V power source with battery backup to limit the number of cables and plugs needed. So after bouncing between T-5's and LED's I found the lighting I liked but I wanted that cool coral pop of UV to start a few hours before and last a few hours after the main light cycle. So I grabbed eight 3W - 405nm LED's and wired them in series so I could run them off of my 24V power source. So I had an insane amount of luminal output over a smaller tank. What happened next took months to occur but in retrospect it's the only way to explain the die off.

Side note: I have other fish in tanks all connected to the same water source that are all fine. Those fish never had corals in their tanks so I never made a UV bar to get the corals to pop. So I'm ruling out disease. And with a tank so new I doubt I have a Bobbit Worm like I had 15 years ago that took out all of my other fish but I could see him at night. Nasty guy, but really cool!

I NOW know that most animal eyes are able to perceive deep blues and deep reds but not able to perceive intensity(hence why lasers are so dangerous). My open water fish died first, then the rock dwellers and then finally the cryptic fish. The last fish just slowly drifted around the tank bumping into things and would not respond to bright flashlights or startling strobes which led me to believe that I blinded all of my fish. I feel horrible and wanted to help people understand that spectrum AND intensity are important if you try to build something yourself. Learn from my mistakes and please inform the proper authorities so I may pay for my crimes.
