Help goldfish died all of a sudden after water change

Posted: 11 Jun 2021 06:33 AM PDT

I did a water change around 30% as I do every week in my 60 gallon with 4 comets. I've had these guys for 4 months and all of a sudden they died last night after the water change. They just turned pale and flipped over. Can someone help me understand what happened?

What's wrong with my goldfish?

What's wrong with my goldfish?

I just bought an oranda goldfish from the pet store today. I know that's typically a no-go, but I was in buying food for a different pet and saw the little guy being picked on in his tank. The other fish were quite literally eating his scales off. Anyways, I took him home and set him up in a previously cycled 30-gallon tank. And now, maybe 9 hours later, he's lost lots of energy and is covered in this strange white stuff. Not sure how to help him, but I'm hoping somebody on here will. I've since moved him to a 5-gallon bucket with an airstone in hopes of controlling the situation. Please help!

This is Max. I've had him for 10 years but I don't know much about goldfish. I just discovered this white growth on his head. That bump on his side has been there for a while but it was much smaller. Sometimes he just goes still with his fins folded up for a few seconds. What's wrong with him?

Aquarium or indoor pond for goldfish?

Posted: 10 Jun 2021 08:17 PM PDT

I'm going to upgrade my goldfish when she outgrows her current tank(40g), but don't know if an aquarium or indoor pond would be better. I can fit a 90g aquarium max in the room because anything longer won't fit and I can't find any with different dimensions. The alternative would be an indoor pond made with a water trough, which I'm pretty sure can hold more without exceeding the size barriers but I'm not 100% on that. Any input will be greatly appreciated :)

Is there anything I can do to help my fish recover from bad ammonia poisoning?

Posted: 10 Jun 2021 05:19 PM PDT

Hi everyone,

For background, I have an established 6ft tank that's been happily running with no issues for the last 9 months. Currently I have 3 ranchu (about 8cm long), 2 oranda (about 10cm long) and 2 baby pearl scales (3cm long) residing in the tank. It has a XL sponge filter, fluval 07 cannister filter and fluval U4 internal filter. I have a heater keeping the temp a constant 23 degrees celsius and have been doing weekly water changes with water parameters always returning perfect results... there are several live plants throughout the tank as well.

I woke up this morning to all but 1 of my fish floating side-up in the corner of the tank, gasping for air. I immediately moved them into a bucket of fresh water and they perked up and started swimming somewhat normally again but sadly 1 of the pearscales didn't make it. I started setting up a spare tank straight away as their reaction made me think the water in the main tank was bad - I tested the water and I've had a massive ammonia spike over night, currently registering 1.0 ppm. I set up the spare tank with their sponge filter for aeration and most of them have started acting normally, but unfortunately 2 ranchu are still swimming sideways and losing a lot of slime coat. Only these 2 fish are showing actual physical signs of ammonia burns too, all other fish have no visible signs but were floating lifeless in the main tank before being removed.

I'm a bit obsessed with my goldies so I am constantly checking them for signs of illness or disease so I can treat them quickly if anything pops up, and noticed no signs of ammonia burns or poisoning yesterday. They were swimming around happily with their normal appetitive during dinner and were acting normally around 10:30pm when we went to bed. This morning at 8am they were all half dead... I had no idea ammonia poisoning could work this quickly.

The tank has no other fish besides the goldies so there would be no dead bodies hiding somewhere, and all plants are healthy and lush with no dead debris floating around... I clean my tank quite regularly and always trim off dying leaves.

The only thing that has changed recently was 2 weeks ago I added some LFS store bought driftwood and swapped the output nozzle on my cannister filter to a spray bar instead. I doubt any of these could have caused such an ammonia spike but that's all that has changed... I did a deep clean a month ago and generally only do these once every 1-2 months. I do water testing 24hrs after each water change so my cycle definitely didn't crash during the last deep clean - I'm also careful to only deep clean 1 filter at a time during water changes to avoid cycle crashes.

I'm wondering if anyone could have any ideas as to why my ammonia could have randomly spiked after almost a year or stability and routine. Also, is there anything I can do for my fish to help them recover from the poisoning? I'm so upset, I love these little piggies so much and it devastates me to see them suffering from their own environment that I created for them. My favourite and biggest ranchu seems to be suffering the worst, and I'm worried he won't make it. I hope I got them out in time but I'm worried what to do from here. Should I empty the tank completely or just do a large water change? Like 50-70?% and a deep clean?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Is this bullying or breeding behavior? Orange is male, calico female. I haven't been able to tell if he is telling her to leave him alone or trying to breed!! Also he does this most when there is food around but doesn't really prevent her from eating. Most of the time they just hang out together.
