Update on my koi, they are very small for their age so we’ve upped the amount of food we give twice a day and they seem to enjoy it as well as growing bigger

Help! Sick Koi!

Posted: 31 May 2021 11:46 AM PDT

Please help we don't know what's wrong. My boyfriend and I got a butterfly koi yesterday. He acclimated well and was swimming great in the tank.

Today we woke up and he was just laying at the bottom barely moving. We put him in a salt bath and then a quarantine tank. Now he's laying at the bottom of the quarantine tank on his side and his gills are going crazy like he's struggling to breathe.

We've checked the water multiple times and the levels are good. Does anyone know what's happening to him?

New house - new Koi!

New house - new Koi!

Hi everyone - I'm hoping some experts might be able to identify some koi for us. My parents very recently bought a house, and it came with a small pond. We knew there were fish in there but it was very murky so didn't really see much. We've cleared it up and it looks like there are some pretty big Koi in there. At least I think they're Koi, there's a few goldfish too by the looks of things.

I've advised my parents the pond is too small, it's only about 50cm deep and about 3.5x2.5m. They've already found someone to redo it and give the fish much more space. But in the meantime, any idea of what kind of Koi we have here would be really great, just for interest. I looked online but these seem to have a lot of different patterns rather than one obvious thing.

Thanks so much! If it's helpful I can try and number a few on the images.

Who murdered my koi?

Posted: 31 May 2021 09:30 AM PDT

When I woke up this morning, I went outside to feed my fish when I realized they were mostly huddled up together with some stragglers hiding in any available hiding spots. As the day progressed they started calming down a little, but are obviously spooked.

My pond has a lot of places where fish can hide where I can't find them, so I'm not sure if any are gone gone, but I did find one dead one, and his belly is cut open with a bit of entrails coming out.

What could have done this?

We have had a heron considering giving them a go, but the pond is 3-4 feet deep depending on where you're measuring, plus I have an aerator that I mostly put on to agitate the water and make them more difficult to target.

The most frustrating thing is that I have a ring camera/floodlight installed to keep an eye on the pond, but someone had flipped the switch so it was off.

How would a fishes belly be cut open? No damage appears to be anywhere else. Thoughts?

Thank you!!
