This is my entry to a local (Philippines) goldfish growout competition. Still have 2 months to groom before judgement day. What fish competitions do you have in your place?

Lighting questions

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 03:52 PM PST

Hey everyone, I recently got a small fan tail goldfish to put in my 20gal tank, however, He becomes very stressed when I turn on the aquarium light and he stays still in one position, this also happens with sunlight, so i put it in a dark room with small blue led lights around the base of the tank and it seems to do just fine, in fact he's only active during night times. Is it possible that it's nocturnal? Or do I need to change lights? Any help would be appreciated :)

How should I treat and feed my sick/injured goldfish?

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 06:50 PM PST

Background (bear with me, it's a lot): A little over a week ago, I accidentally left the bottom off of the filter after cleaning the tank. Later, I found that my fish had been sucked into the bottom of the filter, stuck in it's base (not the inner machinery) for who-knows-how-long. Sadly, the suction injured his jaw and eye, and I was worried he wouldn't be able open his mouth. However, the next day his eye looked much better and he could open his mouth normally.

I hoped that was the end of it, but a few days later, black patches appeared around his jaw and eye socket, the same places he had been injured. I figured it was an internal injury or bacterial infection, so I started treating the tank with Melafix. Over the next few days, my fish became more lethargic, lying at the bottom of his tank and gasping for breath. He stopped eating, even when I placed food near his face.

A couple days ago, I stopped the Melafix treatment and decided to move him to a hospital tank, treating him with Methylene Blue. I was hoping it would help him get more oxygen. (I'm also using it as a dip for 10 seconds each day, following instructions on the bottle.) Although he still lies at the bottom of the tank, he seems to have more energy, occasionally swimming around. But only a little.

During all this time, I kept trying to get him to eat a little. However, he didn't seem to even see the fish flakes around him. I thought he was simply too weak to eat, so I didn't push him. But then today, I gave him a couple of peas, and he devoured them...sort of. He would spit most of it out again, though I'm hoping he swallowed a little. Occasionally, he'd swallow a stray fish flake, but he spit those out even faster. This evening, I discovered a large pile of tiny food bits on the bottom of his tank, like he's been foraging and spitting everything out again.

Okay, with ALL that background in place, here are my two sets of questions.

1) Is there anything else I can be doing to treat my fish? What do the black patches mean?

2) Why does my fish keep spitting out food? Is there a different protein I could try feeding him, along with the peas?

TL;DR Fish is weak with black patches after injury and keeps spitting out food. What do I do?

Further details: The hospital tank is 3.5 gallons. His normal tank is 10 gallons. I don't have the water quality specs yet, but I'll try to get them soon. I'm on day 2 of methylene blue treatment. I've already tried googling some answers to my questions, but this is such a specific situation, I'm struggling to find answers.

Sand suck on my fish?

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 04:45 PM PST

Upgraded my tank size today and switched to sand substrate for the first time. (Kept my old gravel in a net for BB) There are grains of sand that seem to be stuck all over a few of my goldfish. It's definitely sand, not ich because it's black. Is this common? will they come off? Do i need to help him get it off?

Why is my cycle stuck like this?! It’s been 2 weeks, normally my nitrates are 10-20 ppm. My tap water has 10 ppm nitrates so I don’t understand how it’s now going backwards
