I lost a buddy today. Chili was the most Chill Betta fish I've ever seen. He'd lay around like a water potato. LFS ordered him for an employee who didn't like his colour, so they gave him to me for free. He may have just been a fish, but he provided much comfort in times of loneliness. 2018 - 2021.

An open letter to future aquarium keepers. Part one: The monsters in your mind.

Hi there, you probably found this because you are looking on this subreddit and are looking to start your own tank. That's amazing! You are amazing, and I am glad you chose this hobby! So allow me to help teach you the lessons I wish someone taught me.

Keeping aquariums is fun, exciting, and relaxing, it helps ground you, gives you a living part of nature in your home, and it gives you an outlet for your creativity.

But there are monsters that you have to defeat, and if you do not defeat them, you will find only death and destruction for any tank you put together. So let me lead you, and we will slay the first two beasts.

Let me get philosophical.... well this whole post is about philosophy, so let me get more philosophical.

What was humanity's greatest sin?

Some may think it's gluttony.

Some will say greed.

Some will even say it is lust.

But I believe it is arrogance.

And this is the first beast.

Someone wants to buy an aquarium, they go to the petco and buy a 20 gallon tank, some rainbow gravel and a goldfish. They set up the tank, dump in some declorinated water, and add the fish.

They feed it, filter the water, maybe even add a snail to keep things fresh. And three weeks later, it happens.

Cleaning day.

They take the goldfish out, put him in a cup, and then completely drain the aquarium, scoop out all of the gravel, dump it in a bucket and scrub every surface, wash every inch, and then carefully reassemble the tank, refill it, add the declorinator, and the fish.

The fish will die, they will try again, and after three fish die inexplicably, they'll just sigh, and think that this whole fish thing isn't for them, they'll sell the aquarium and move on.

Our arrogance is immeasurable, and it is pervasive.

We think that we are above nature, gods that can snap their fingers and change the world. We subject our fish tanks to the laws of man, thinking that we are doing the best for the fish. Providing them a clean home while also decorating the space in our own home.

In doing so we subject the tank to the laws of prophylactic and technology, and it will die. Every time.

So instead of arrogantly assuming we must control the aquarium, we must instead look to mother nature and learn from her. We have to see our fish tank not as a decoration, but as a portal to allow life into our space to flourish, and provide for it by following the laws of life.

The first beast, arrogance can only be defeated with knowledge, so take the time to learn and plan your tank. And make it follow nature, stay away from silk plants, injection molding, and expensive rocks painted gaudy colors. Instead you should look to nature.

Put live plants, snails, mussels, and bottom feeders in your tank to help clean the water and substrate, buy a filter with enough biological filtration, and cycle your tank.

And you are ready to move on to the next monster.

And if for some reason you liked this, please give me fake internet points, I want to livestream later and my account doesn't have the karma to do it yet.

Thanks!!
