Today I lost my beautiful Jon. I honestly have no idea what happened but when I went to feed him this morning he had a wound on his head and he died not long after.

Anybody know the specific type of goldfish? Much longer (and different) tail than the rest and much more interesting colours. Beautiful - wondering if it’s a rare type or something..

Why is my goldfish constantly doing this? (Details in comments)

I've been using an API test kit and currently my nitrites are showing .25 ppm. I just used the nitrate test kit, followed all the instructions as to how long to shake etc, and when I test my tank water, the vial immediately turns brown. I tested twice to make sure it wasn't a fluke but they both turned brown, and not any type of brown that registers on the card. I tested my sink water however, and it turned yellow, reading 0ppm. Can anyone tell me what's going on, what to do and what will happen?

1 year old common (possibly comet hybrid) pond goldfish has fin damage.

Posted: 21 Sep 2020 02:59 PM PDT

I've moved her into a hospital tank indoors from a ~165 gallon pond & I've been treating with Melafix for almost a week, as well as adding salt to the tank. I don't know the parameters of the pond she came from, but I've been regularly cleaning the pre-filter pondbox every week, Her siblings all appear to be doing fine as well. Her condition doesn't seem to be getting any worse thankfully, but if her fins are repairing, it seems really slow. Does anybody here have experience with fin rot or extensive fin damage? How long does it usually take under optimal conditions for a goldfish to repair its fins? If the damage wears down the spines in their fins, will they regrow those too?

Help! Fish need oxygenated water but we dont have any supplies that are needed for that

Posted: 21 Sep 2020 12:13 PM PDT

Alright, so my mother had a wedding and the party decorators decided to put fish bowls as decorations on the tables. I hate when people do this because this is literal torture to them and can they can also die from that, but luckily, no fish died from loud music and bass. After the party was finished, literally no fish were taken home by party guests so here I am with 6 fucking fish (one literally just died so its 5). They are all in a somewhat medium sized bowl. Theyre in one of those basic ass round bowls that you see fish in on movies and shows, its pretty small for all of them.

Anyway, yes a fish just died. And a lot of them are opening and closing their mouth which is apparently a symptom of lack of oxygen. But we dont have any proper things for fix and on top of that I dont even want these fish either. Apparently they need oxygenated water to survive, but we dont have any air pumps or whatever you need. I dont want these fish, I had beta fish before and they didnt require any oxygenated water. They all died of old age because they were alive for about a year and a half. We just put them in a large tank, without filters, pumps, or anything really but I did change their water regularly which was a pain in the ass.

Anyway, goldfish are not like bettas. So what the hell do I do? Where can I give them away? I dont want these fish but I mean I dont want them to have a terrible death either. What can I do?

Am I Paranoid?

Posted: 21 Sep 2020 11:44 AM PDT

I hate to be a helicopter fish-mom, but I noticed that my two-year-old common goldfish is acting...weird. Normally, he can't wait to gobble up his Omega One sinking pellets, but this morning, he keeps spitting them out and not eating them. Do goldfish get tired of eating the same pellets every day? I try to make sure that he's receiving a variety of tasty treats in his diet, like peas, brine shrimp, and the occasional fruit, but lately, he seems so disinterested.
Oppositely, I jumped to the conclusion that his aquarium temperature, which is 70 degrees Fahrenheit, might be causing some laziness and inactivity on his part. I know that goldfish prefer cooler temperatures, but during the summer, the tank stayed fairly consistently around 74-76 degrees. I'm not sure what's going on. Am I being paranoid?

Trash Can Filter? First Pond? Goldfish?

Posted: 21 Sep 2020 03:01 PM PDT

I found this cute, cheap, small deck pond!! I have never had a pong, but my comet goldfish need something bigger than what they are in! I have a couple questions!

  1. We have one outlet outside, but my parents say that its an electrical hazard. Where would I plug in the pump? It says it comes with a solar powered aerator.
  2. Is a solar powered aerator ok for my goldfish? Since there is no solar power during the night, will they be fine with no aerator on at night and it only on in the day time?
  3. How do I make a cheap, easy trash can filter? I am super confused even after all the videos I have watched! I don't know what some pieces are!
  4. I only need a filter/pump and an aerator, right? Should I also get a heater for the winter? Its cold here and rainy. When should I put in the heater?
  5. Should I get a chiller for the summer? It can get 90+ degrees Fahrenheit.
  6. When it rains, how do I make sure it doesn't overflow? It rains here a lot.
  7. Is chicken wire ok for a cover? I feel one of the nets are going to be expensive.
  8. Should I put it right next to my house so it gets shade and sun?
  9. What plants should I get for it?
  10. Do I need anything for the bottom of it? (Wood, plants, sand, Ect.)
  11. Is cycling a pond the same as cycling an aquarium? Can I use fish food for ammonia? I'm on a real tight budget.
  12. Can I repaint the outside? Its grey right now, but I think dark purple would make it stand out more against my white house. Its a wood raised deck pond. (If I said that right?)
  13. Do you do water changes on ponds?
  14. Can Mystery snails and Goldfish be together? If yes, can you put mystery snails in the pond?
  15. During the winter, it can snow here, it normally does- about 1-2 inches, maybe 3 inches. Some years it doesn't. How do I keep the snow from not getting into the pond?

I might have more questions later! Thanks! I am new to this, so please no hate! And I would love it if you could answer my questions!! Thanks! TIA!

What size aquarium can I fit in an appartment?

Posted: 21 Sep 2020 12:04 PM PDT

I "rescued" a goldfish from my roommate a year ago (it's a long story, the goldfish sadly died) and bought an aquarium and a tankmate for him without doing any research. In my defence my roommate used an empty bacardi bottle as fish bowl and the fish got hardly any oxygen because of the shape of the bottle, so I had no time to do any research and I had to act very fast. I also bought a new tankmate a few months ago (because the goldfish that was left was so lonely) and I slightly regret that choice because that means that my way too small 160 liter aquarium is overstocked with two slim bodied goldfish. The way I'm dealing with this is by doing 80% water changes every week. My goldfish are active and they are growing very fast.

I'm graduating school soon and I expect my financial situation to improve a lot after school, so I'm researching aquarium makers in my area and I'm super excited to get an enormous aquarium (between 2 and 3 meters wide). However reality hit me and I have absolutely no idea what size aquarium I can have in an appartment (I will probably life in an appartment). I'm actually scared of the aquarium falling through the floor. Does anyone have experience with this?

Hello again.

Posted: 21 Sep 2020 08:50 AM PDT

Hello again.

some of you may know me for my other post.

this post

Anyways, ive had less fish die because of your tips, thank you!

But i still have another problem, i just had one of my favorite fish die overnight (mostly all my fish have always died overnight) . He seemed alright for the past weeks, but there was an overall change of behaviour. as i am typing this, i have removed all my fish from that one tank where the fish are getting sick, as it may be poisoned of ammonia and what not.

If you can help me treat this problem, please comment and dont be afraid of asking me anything (pictures, details, anything needed.)

Thank you.
