I'm needing a bit of help with detritus build up..

Hello all, I am very new into my nano tank journey, and whilst I'm actively researching to learn new things I thought it might be helpful to ask some people in the hobby for advice.

I have a 3 gallon cube tank that houses about 6 cherry shrimp, one male Endler, and one Nerite. They have all been doing pretty well so far (I've had the tank for about a month now) I also have a about 4 smaller, low to the ground type of plants and one bridge made from a coconut shell that has Christmas moss on it. Oh, also I have sand on the bottom, which I am now reconsidering..

I am finding that debris builds up verrrrrry quickly in the tank and I am ciphoning it out about every other day to two days which is slightly hard to do because I don't want to take too much water out of the tank. Also the Nitrates are consistently ever so slightly elevated, and go down once I do this small water change but then go slightly back up about a every two days. So I'm just unsure if I am having a filtration issues, issue with the plants, or issue with the lighting, or just something else completely...My filter is a really small sponge filter and I'm questioning if it's doing a good enough job. With such a small tank I am worried if I do a big water change it will disturb them too much. I do not believe I am over feeding so I don't think that is the total cause of this build up appearing.

I don't know if this will help but I am going to get a better filter and change the substrate.

Also, I just want to note that the water isn't cloudy and the debris that occurs every few days isn't like a massive amount, but it's enough to really pester me, and I am concerned about the nitrates. All the other levels are really good.

I am very much a novice at this and I really hope that people can look past my ignorance regarding this issue and help me move towards a solution, I'm extremely open to learning and just want the crew to be okay! Thanks!

Wondering about blocking a filter intake

Posted: 21 Sep 2020 08:51 PM PDT

New to nano tanks and new to shrimp keeping, my 2.5 gallon tank is running this filter, I was wondering about foaming the intake to prevent shrimp fry from being sucked inside. Most of the foam intake covers I see are cylindrical and likely wouldnt work, was wondering if anyone could recommend anything!
