PSA: Test your tap water before a water change. Don't blindly trust that tap water will always be the same. My city water just changed from using free chlorine to using chloramines for water treatment.

FW uses chlorine for disinfection purposes, which can be harmful to fish if not dechlorinated prior to placing fish in it. FW utilizes two types of chlorine, free chlorine and chloramines (chlorine and ammonia mixture). Chloramines are normally used July - March, and free chlorine is generally used April - June. Free chlorine and chloramine dechlorination is performed differently. Chemical additives with directions for dechlorinating either free chlorine or chloramine from water for use in fish tanks or ponds are available at pet/fish supply stores.

Chloramine according to their site is a mixture of chlorine and ammonia. What this means is there will be ammonia in the water and regular dose of dechlorinator might not be enough.

They do this every year and from my experience, if I add this water to my aquarium even if I dose it with prime, the tank will instantly get cloudy. The cloudy water means I fucked up and will lose a lot of shrimp. I've fucked up a couple of times.

So yeah, don't just test aquarium water, test the replacement water too.

Shrimp Hamster wheel

Posted: 31 Jul 2020 10:13 PM PDT

So I decided to add a feed dish yesterday to my shrimp tank, and all the shrimps have thus far avoided it. Except for two, one of which i think got stuck inside....

https://streamable.com/c6nenb

It kept going in circles over and over and I was scared it was going to stress itself to death so i gently put two prongs in its way and it swam out after going around it a few times.

Scratch that it just went back in again.... guess it wasn't stuck?
