Update on Little! The axolotl who decided the land was much more suitable! He’s doing fantastic! Eating every day! Comes to the edge for food now and practically tries to climb onto my hand! Here are some up close and personal photos! He’s not camera shy at all!

How do I promote Gill growth ? (Backstory in comments)

Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:52 AM PDT

My little guy Killian is swimming around a lot more (which I’m not really worried about) but his gills look darker and I’m not sure if something is wrong. I’ve not had him long and don’t know if this is something I should be worried about. Any ideas?

Nitrite won’t go down, tank is crashed ?

Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:53 AM PDT

Hi there, I've had my axolotl for about a month now and I'm pretty certain my cycle is crashed. Tank was cycled for 5 weeks before I got her and everything was fine until this week when I noticed we had nitrite present and ammonia was high. I cleaned the tank thoroughly and proceeded with water changes. Over the last week I've definitely done an 100% water change in total but there's no significant changes in the parameters apart from ammonia which has reduced from 1ppm to 0.25 ppm but nitrites have stayed the same. Current parameters are Ph: 7 Ammonia: 0.25 ppm Nitrite: 2 ppm Nitrate: 5 ppm I have been adding prime with every water change and my axolotl still looks healthy but at this point I'm ready to tub her because I'm so stressed out about her. this is my first aquatic pet so any help is greatly appreciated.

Earthworm alternative?

Posted: 02 Aug 2020 08:31 PM PDT

Hi all! I inherited a couple adorable axolotls this past winter and have been feeding them pellet food as that's what they were eating before. However, one of my guys looks a little thin and I'm concerned he's not eating the pellets that don't immediately fall in front of his face. I've switched over to earthworms the past week or so and they're totally into it. BUT I apparently don't have the stomach for cutting the worms into small enough chunks that my little guys can eat them. (Currently I'm doing it, but really not going to be sustainable long term). Does anyone have recommendations on any smaller type worms (or maybe how to find tiny earthworms?) that would be a suitable diet? TIA!

Albino axolotl and Wild type babies?

Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:22 AM PDT

Is the albino gene more dominant than others? If I had a wild type and and an albino would the offspring be 50/50 both types? Purely out of curiosity. I'm about to do some research but I thought maybe asking here could be faster.
