I've been trying for 2 months to figure out why my tank had a yellow haze to it, and after countless trial and errors, I changed the light bulb.

Hacking your Aquarium? Idea for a Community Event

Posted: 05 Aug 2020 05:50 AM PDT

Over the years, I've had a ton of ideas come and go of how I could better improve my setups. Whether its coming up with creative ways to design a better gravel vac or understanding how I could hack my aquarium's chemistry to get various plants and coral to grow faster....

I'd love to organize something like a Hackathon for fellow hobbyists to come together and find ways to improve our biggest pain points in the hobby.

For those who aren't familiar, a Hackathon is an event where individuals or groups work on projects to be completed over a specific time frame (usually a weekend) and then ultimately, present their results to an audience or panel of judges.

There's plenty of aquascaping competitions out there, but I thought this could be a unique event for fellow hobbyists like myself who are finding themselves with a lot more time on their hands due to COVID-19.

Here's what I envision:

  • The Hackathon would take place over the course of a weekend (September 4th - 6th)
  • Anyone can sign up to work on a project / join a team (created a sub r/aquariumhacks for this)
  • Projects can be anything aquarium related (improving tank equipment, running tests on plants/coral, really anything that sparks your interest)
  • Event is free / open to anyone around the world

At the end of the weekend, each individual or team will upload the results of their project and winners will be chosen through community voting.

Hopefully this sounds fun to a few people and we can learn some cool stuff. Let me know what you think! Open to ideas/suggestions/feedback.

I would recommend anyone with an aquarium to get a magnifying glass, its so much fun to look at your animals zoomed in

Just want to remind everyone that melafix has been scientifically proven to do nothing. It is snake oil. Stop wasting your money.
