I’ve been curating a hair algae anemone substitute in my 24 gallon soft/LPS set up. Somebody tell me if this is a terrible idea. So far my clowns have been hosting it like it’s the real thing so I don’t want to spoil their fun.

Newbie questions (sorry)

Posted: 01 Jul 2020 08:32 PM PDT

So I am looking to start my own saltwater tank because I finally have some downtime. I have been watching videos about reef tanks for years and I feel like I know a lot about the hobby without ever doing anything myself. I have a couple questions that maybe some of you could help me with!

  1. I am looking to spend max $1500 at the moment for a setup, I'm not looking for a fully stocked tank or anything atm.

  2. With this budget, should I go for a nano? I think that a 44 gallon is within budget but I have heard that new hobbyists should stick to large tanks

  3. What all is needed? I have seen so many videos about all the different equipment that is needed. But some nano tanks have protein skimmers, some have automatic dosers, some have sumps while others just use canister filters. I know that sumps are good because they add volume and you can add biomedia but are they essential? Lighting, heater and wave makers are a given.

  4. How long does the new tank need to cycle? I've seen some people add a jumpstart solution to the tank with bacteria and other stuff that can cycle the tank in under 3 days, but is that a good idea?

  5. How difficult was it to actually get started? I feel like it's one thing to know facts about reefing, but it's another to actually do it. How hard was it to figure out plumbing and wiring if you have an automatic dosing system? Also is an apex system a must?

Thanks so much for reading this massive wall of texts, I would really like to get into reefing but don't want to just burn $1500, thanks so much!!!

Hi! Quick question, is there ANY cuc that a Valentini puffer won’t eat?

I'm cycling my biocube 32 and am looking into Valentini puffers. They look really cool, but I hear they will eat lots of cleanup crews... is there ANYTHING they won't eat? Like starfish or urchins or something?

My first reefscape. I made the rocks myself. Just need to anchor some pieces in place. Feedback is appreciated.

ID on this? I think it's a feather duster worm. Trochus in the background for scale.
