hypothetical question - 10 gallon terrarium?

I am new to this but already having so much fun! I have a 10 gallon aquarium tank and I was wondering if it would be plausible to take water and dirt and a river plant or two from the river near my house and achieve a similar effect to the jarrarium I have now. The issue would be that it couldn't be fully enclosed, I only have a screen lid for the aquarium. Would I be able to make this work?
