First attempt at a Jarrarium, advice appretiated

Hi guys, I had a bit of a sea monkey catastrophe and would like some advice =)

I wanted to make a self sustaining ecosystem for my sea monkeys in a three litre glass jar as a lockdown project. I put crushed charcoal in as a substrate and for plants I added a java fern and added two Japanese moss balls. I also added some live phytoplankton and sea monkey food (algae I assume). I added one teaspoon of salt per litre to make the water a bit salty.

When I added the sea monkeys (which had been growing well for the past few weeks in a set) an hour later they all died, in not too sure why but I'll not be adding any more =(

Any advice on other critters or crustaceans I can add that would survive? I live in an urban area so finding them outside isn't an option, but ebay, amazon, and pet shops are. Are copepods a good idea or will they just die too?

Cheers

Just made this today in my backyard! It's got a false bottom, a few pillbugs and lots of distilled water for its travels. Hopefully it goes well and let me know what you think.

Minimum size jar needed for cherry shrimp?

Not sure if this was the right place to ask but I was thinking about setting up a little shrimp pot that would be left unsealed, but wasn't sure about an appropriate size.
