I trusted my friends to take care of my fish while I was gone. Now he will probably die Posted: 26 Jul 2020 07:16 AM PDT I am so devastated and beyond pissed off. I am in college and had to return to my parent's home during COVID and could not take my poor fish with me. I had two friends who were staying in town, and before I left I gave them detailed instructions on how to care for him as well as told them to contact me if they have any questions, asking them to watch his behavior and I will venmo them if they need to buy anything. I came back this weekend to prepare to move back in and went to see my fish (his name is Beans). His tank was in a sorry state. Brown algae everywhere, including inside the filter. Dead plants. Beans was just laying on the bottom. He definitely has fin rot, which he has already had this year! And his beautiful fins had grown fully back by the time I had to leave. They had even surpassed how he looked before he got it. He also may have a growth on his side (I can't truly tell because looking at him for too long makes me want to cry). I trusted these people, my close friends, with my little buddy. I should have asked for more pictures to see how he was doing. Maybe then they would have taken better care of him because I could have told them he was not doing well. They claim ignorance. They said he was "acting normal" which he most certainly was NOT! He was laying on his side at the bottom of the tank when I got here for goodness sake! And they claimed ignorance about the algae, that they had been testing the ph etc. The ph was 7.2 when I tested it, so if they had been testing the ph they had been neglecting actually doing anything about the acidity. I also told them that the algae is bad for him and they still let it grow EVERYWHERE!! I cleaned his tank of course. Put all fresh gravel in there because the algae was so deeply embedded in the gravel that was in the tank. Cleaned algae off of every surface. Added aquarium salt and Melafix. I am going to buy new plants and a new filter today. I hope that I can save him, but I still feel incredibly guilty. I left him here, trusting that my friends would care for him because one of them is very passionate about animals, she is a vegan and has had fish before so I thought she would care for him properly as I thought she would never let an animal suffer. Now I see that I was wrong. I just can't stop thinking that poor Beans feels like I abandoned him. Like I left him alone to die with negligent care givers. I know he is just a fish but I love him so much. I don't want him to die especially like this. I don't know why I'm posting this. I just need to rant to people who understand and love betta fish like I do I suppose. I'm sorry for rambling and bad grammar or spelling. I'm just so upset right now. Thank you for reading. Posted: 26 Jul 2020 09:37 AM PDT Hi guys! I wanted to reach out and see about getting advice for my girl, Ember. She's the smallest of the 4 females I have and I've not had any issues, except for feeding. All of them are absolute gluttons! I thought I had a handle on it, until 3 days ago where Ember is so bloated that she cannot swim properly. I was worried it was swim bladder or dropsy at first, but she's ticking ALL the boxes for constipation:
So far, I've tried fasting for 3 days and giving her defrosted, mushed up peas. She ate 1 tiny piece of pea and spat it out! I've now moved her to a hospital tank to stop her sisters picking on her for being lethargic. Advice I've found so far says to starve for up to 7 days, then try Daphnia or Blood Worms. I did try some blood worm but she won't eat anything I offer. I'm tempted to grab some garlic guard and dip food in there to tempt her. I've also read about Epsom Salt baths to relieve swelling? But I've never ever used it before and I'm terrified I'd do something wrong. Can anyone give some advice? Their own experiences? I'll take anything! [link] [comments] | ||
