Why did my water flea population die out?

Posted: 19 Jul 2020 06:53 AM PDT

There use to be dozens but suddenly this morning as I checked my jar, there were only a handful left. ):

Also could the population ever grow again?

This jar got a mold outbreak that wiped out everything half a year ago. I put it outside a fews month and it came back to life. It is like a miracle

New to this! Looking for advice.

Hi everyone,

I've been interested in making an ecosphere/ terrarium, and decided to take the initiative to make one.

I'd really love to make one in a screw top mason jar, but I have no idea where to start.

What plants would fit comfortably in a regular sized mason jar? What soil/ substrate should I be using? How should I add isopods/ critters to it? I have some sand that I took from beaches were I've been on holiday will they be able to join the terrarium? I'm UK based so what are the best sites to source this stuff from?

Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks!

Questions about my first terrarium

Posted: 18 Jul 2020 07:41 PM PDT

I'm plan on building a terrarium here shortly but there are a few things I still need to understand:

Is it possible to make a terrarium with no bugs at all? I'd prefer just having plants but I'm not sure if this is doable, especially if I get any plants from outside.

Are the plants that you can use limited or will most common species survive in a properly established closed build (as in, will I kill certain plants by trying to put them inside of a terrarium)? Also, what are some common plants for a closed terrarium that I could find either outside or at a nursery?

Are closed terrariums completely self-sustaining or will I have to routinely maintain it to keep it healthy? It almost seems to good to be true.

Tips on first jar!

Posted: 18 Jul 2020 10:49 PM PDT

I want to start my first jar and I was wondering if I should get water and rocks and moss from a local lake or river or does it matter? And is there any fish or snails i could buy at a pet store that would live in the jar? Any other tips and advice would be greatly appreciated!

This yellow stuff has started growing in my tank, I did have it a little wet recently. Is it a kind of fungus? Is it harmful?
