Posted: 04 Jul 2020 07:25 AM PDT Hello! I'm new to dwarf crayfish and shrimp but not new to fish keeping. I have a problem. I have a 40 gallon breeder with a matten filter. I started with 11 CPOs and about a dozen blue shrimp about a 5 weeks ago. Things were going well until about a week or so ago. I had one go missing but that's hard to really tell since the tank has a million hiding places. About a week ago one of the mothers discharged and ate her eggs. Things have gotten worse recently, I've lost three in the last three days now. Water parameter are mostly good. PH=7.6, Ammonia and Nitrites are zero. Nitrate is either 10 or 20, I can't tell the difference on the chart! My KH and GH worry me. KH is 5 degrees, GH is 90ppm. TDS is 160. The tank is at 75 degrees and lowering it is tough since it is summer where I am. My guess is that the water isn't hard enough but I'm within the "good" parameter suggested on the Aquatic Arts page. So, assuming it is hardness related, how can I add hardness? Calcium Carbonate, right? That's my problem. I've already done that. The tank is a 40 gallon breeder (150l) and I have enough coral rock from a never started salt water tank to fill two or three 5 gallon (18l) buckets. There's a lot of rock in there. And I just tested one of the rocks with vinegar and it did sizzle. I can't see that adding coral, or crushed oyster shell is going to help since that is already there. Oh, I'm not doing huge water changes either. I do about 15% each week. So, what's my next step. I'm just guessing that my die off is from failed molts but it could just be aggression, the little guys are always sparring with each other. And I have had 2 successful molts that I know of. There are only 7 of the in the tank now so there is plenty of room. Oh, and I have some shrimp in the tank and I'm not seeing any die offs from them but they're so small it is difficult to tell. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
