Announcing a new rule: No art-or-craft-work that is not directly impacting or going to impact a real aquarium.

To Our Dear Aquarists and Community Members -

The mission of this subreddit is and has always been the focus on hobbyist assistance, discussion and the sharing of our tanks, scapes, stocks and systems. Over the years we have had facets of the community that begin to overshadow and impact the effectiveness of that core mission. Memes and reposts started clogging the front page every day, burying help posts, so it was moved to /r/Aquariummemes. Similarly, buy/sell/trade posts became a marketplace unto themselves and drowned out the conversation and thus /r/aquaswap was born. The naming and shaming of bad tanks is completely counter to this subreddit and was split off to /r/shittyaquariums.

Today, we face a new issue. We have lately been inundated with "art" posts that include drawings, sculptures, crochet and other tangible goods. These posts are often made by people who are not members of our community and are thinly veiled (or not at all) attempts at advertising products or services for sale. These often put them in direct violation of rule 2, which they circumvent by commenting "I can't post the link to my store, but DM me." This makes their practices unfair to the many, many advertisers the mod team fends off from cannibalising this sub. More importantly, they quickly take over the front page and bury help questions and legitimate community content.

These posts are popular and fun, but are counter to the mission of this community. Because of this, art posts will now be redirected to /r/artquariums. This will provide a platform not only for artistic expression, but more importantly for the artists: places to hawk and sell their kitch without skirting rules 2, 3, 5 and 7 which all other users have to follow without exception.

To prevent skirting the already established rules, we have decided to add a new rule to the sub: Rule 8, which reads: "No art-or-craft-work that is not directly impacting or going to impact a real aquarium." Adding a new, explicit rule helps identify and remove posts without it being subject to nuance. It also acts as a preventative measure, and allows users to reliably report infractions of this new rule.

The wording of this rule has been carefully chosen to continue to allow actual DIY/build projects that still relate to the fundamental mission of the subreddit, such as stands, decorations, and even aquascapes, while barring the posts at issue. Just like rule 2, if a user has 9 original content posts for every one art/self-promotion post, then it stays.

With the dominance these posts are showing over this subreddit, their new home will undoubtedly become a thriving community, and we look forward to seeing it grow.

Cheers and happy fishkeeping,

The mod team

Rescued this poor little guy for free from my LFS two weeks ago. Yes he looks bad but the progress he’s made is crazy. Went from lying on the bottom of the QT tank on his side to eating like a pig and hangin with the big dudes.

Second update on my tank, i now have two java ferns and a anubis plant. I also have plants coming in the mail. I started dosing with fluvon or something to speed up cycling as well as a nerite snail and three serpae tetras to seed the tank.

Karen Wants To Buy Clownfish, But What She Showed Me Was Horrible

Posted: 19 Jul 2020 09:08 PM PDT

So it was like the 12th of August in 2015 or something like that and i happened to "work" at a local fish store (aquarium store) I say work lightly because I wasn't a employee, I was just cleaning tanks and feeding fish for some extra money as I didn't have a job, but that's for later, so it's about noon and I'm about to feed the fish and clean the discus tanks, but as I get all the equipment a karen walks in with her 2 children, 1 boy and 1 girl, she slowly approaches me as says hi! Kindly I said hello how can I help, she said "me my son and my daughter are looking for a nemo!" (I knew what she meant because clownfish are often referred to as nemo ever since finding nemo came out, so I said "oh you mean a clownfish?" And she said "don't awnser me back or you might just loose a customer" so I headed over the the reef tanks and there was an abundance of clownfish, I told her what one she would like and she looked around and saw a Black & White Ocellaris Clownfish, she looked over at me and said "omg! Yuck that nemo is sick! You should take care of them more" I kindly replied saying "oh no haha that's just a Black & White Ocellaris Clownfish" she again told me "don't awnser me back! Didn't I tell you last time!" So I said "ok sorry anyway which clownfish did you want!" And she looked and saw the really bright one, she pointed at the tank and the lifted her kids up to see, they all said yes, so I went to the manager at the store and asked for an employee to sell them the fish but he said "no worries if you want you can make the sale!" I said sure and I went to the counter, I asked her what tank she had and then she replied "does that matter!" I said "I have to know if these fish are in safe hands" she said "with me!? Of course why would you need to even ask that " so I once again asked for the tank she was holding these clownfish in and she told me "oh my god why ask? Here I'll tell you i have a picture on my phone!" And what she showed me was horrible. It was a tiny fish bowl, with rainbow gravel and a spongebob house, I looked over at her and said "um mam I'm sorry but what is that, these fish are saltwater fish and they need atleast 10 gallons each, what your showing me is a fish bowl that will barley hold a gallon" she swiftly looked at me and said "oh well there just fish! And besides I'll just add some table salt to the water, that should work!" I was so angry at this point but the manager was looking at me so I was made to make a sale, but I didn't because when I gave her the price tag for clownfish she froze, and said "what! $30 for a fish! Your dreaming if you think I'm paying that much" then she said "ok ok I'll make a deal! What about $5 max! I'm not paying anymore than that, i replied "sorry mam I'm not selling you this fish, for starts your keeping it in a habitat where it will die in the first hour, and you've made me stress this fish out and chase it with a net for nothing!" She told her kids I was a bad person and he won't sell us this nemo, her kids both broke down into tears as they walked out of the shop, I imagine they went to another pet store and brought a clownfish and killed it in the first hour of keeping it, I feel sorry for that clownfish if it exists, so moral of the story is that if your going to buy a fish, look into it first and do your research!
