Aquatic Koi Friend lost 7 Koi in 8 months, both old and young, in exact environment that's been healthy for over a decade? My basic water testing shows nothing wrong. N. Indiana. |
Posted: 02 Jun 2020 07:33 PM PDT His pond is about 750 gallons, 36", semi above ground. Two tiers of fountain for aeration. Simple filter material housing on the return end of pump. I tested his pH, Ammonia, and Nitrate tonight and the only thing abmormal was a high pH of 8 (but so is my pond). He said he tops it off (2" added to 34" deep so 5%?) with city water which had chlorine and has never treated the chlorine in decades. I used drinking water test strips for chlorine and I don't think chlorine even showed up but this is 2 days since his last fish loss. Some of his Koi were 20 years old. Some were 5" or so he got from Next Day Koi last Summer. The pond is very clean with a little vegetation. Not much if any direct sunlight. There were no obvious outward signs on any of the dead koi and I looked in the gills of the last dead one but saw nothing. Should he just put in a cocktail and treat the water for diseases or parasites? Add salt water? Send sample of dead fish to lab? Should I get a better test for chlorine? Any advice is appreciated.
