How to clean used Fluval filter.... It was left... Smelly.

Posted: 03 May 2020 10:13 PM PDT

Okay, I saved some money buying a fluval 307 off of Craigslist, but there's a lot that needs to be done to it. It seems it's been left in a shed for a few months WITH water in it. So now I am thinking of ways to go about cleaning smelly mess. I am thinking bleach for the hoses and filter body. But is the media worth saving or should I go ahead and get new media?

To be cleaned, hoses, foam, other porous media.

Thanks for the advice!

Newbie question - Once you've set up a tank, is it difficult to move to a different stand?

Posted: 03 May 2020 08:39 PM PDT

I'm going to be setting up a tank for the first time in about a decade. I'm super excited! I have a 40g breeder tank and will be getting two goldfish. But so far I've been stuck on picking out a stand... I keep going down these rabbit holes of function vs practicality vs how it'll look in the room and it's really starting to bug me how it's blocking me on everything else. So I was wondering - if I get everything set up and in a few months decide to upgrade to a different stand, how difficult is it to move a 40 gallon breeder tank with two fish to a new stand? Can I chill on the stand decision a bit and just get something basic for now or will it be pretty difficult to make a change once I'm all set up?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Want to start a tank, need some advice!

Posted: 03 May 2020 07:01 PM PDT

Hi! I've been fish keeping for about 9 months, exclusively multiple betta, amano and neocardinia shrimp, as well as nerite snails. Despite housing each betta in 10 gallon tank with perfect parameters, I've had bad luck with them. Lots of tumors and euthanising 😞

I've always wanted goldfish as an adult and I'm thinking I want to make the jump! I'm thinking I would like two fancies, probably black Moor, a lavender ranchu and a nerite snail or two. I would probably have a custom tank built to fit on my existing aquarium rack, it would be about 38 gallons (38" wide, 15" high, 15" deep.) I have two spare HOB aqua clear 20 filters I was thinking I would use in the tank, along with a Tetra whisper 10 HOB as well.

Would an aquarium that size be good for them to live their whole lives? Would the parameters be okay? I would rather have it be understocked so the parameters are easier to maintain!

What plants would you suggest? I was thinking anubias as they are tough plants and I'll have a bunch after I take down a few of my 10 gals. I've got tonnes of duckweed in my other tanks I could keep adding to the tank I also have tonnes of hornwort. Can I do large rocks and drift wood with sand as substrate? I know that goldies are notorious for uprooting and eating plants, but I love a more natural look with real plants.

Any suggestions and advice are very very welcomed!

My bf is obsessed with our goldfish. Advice please

Posted: 03 May 2020 09:04 AM PDT

About a month our two ago we were given 12 common goldfish in a 29 gallons tank. Now unfortunately since doing more research into goldfish we understand that this is far too many for our size of tank. I suggested that we give our excess fish to our friend who has a large outdoor pond they can live in, but he is adamant about getting a second tank. We've already invested a bunch of money in getting the tank, plants, the accessories and so on for them but he wants to get ANOTHER tank just so he can keep more of them.

Mind you, we've named each of them so I understand it's hard to give them away. He's also done the bulk of care such as the frequent water changes, the feedings and cleanings etc. I'm just not personally into the idea of having two tanks with twice the care and money, and we don't even really have a good spot for them since we just live in an apartment.

But now any time I suggest buying new items for our apt he says: "so you want to get patio furniture but not a fish tank?" "So you want to get a shelving unit but not a fish tank?"

Is it worth it to get a second tank????

One of my comets keeps getting swimbladder by gulping air, but it isnt oxygen

Posted: 03 May 2020 03:55 AM PDT

I have 4 comets in a 360L long, and one of these fish, after eating, loves to come to the surface and try and "eat more" by gulping in air, the other fish arent like this at all. But I have noticed, it is starting to hang around the top most of the time, but not upside down, its quite minor swimbladder, she just stays near the surface, not gulping, just head under the water staying there. How can i deter it from gulping air after eating food? None of the others do it for very long, and im about to start soaking the pellets, although most of them sank anyway. When its feeding time, she will act completely normal.
