Anybody familiar with what species of Acro this may be? Mostly brown but the growth tips seem to be holding their white/turquoise color and the base has a few green polyps

almost there! added ammonia drops to about 2ppm a few days ago. I added biospira yesterday and already have nitrates. I definitely underestimated this stuff and am super stoked to add my first coral soon.

Day one of my nano reef! What are your thoughts on products such as bio spira to speed up the cycle?

Help getting started with reef tanks please!

Posted: 03 May 2020 09:07 PM PDT

Hey everyone,

I've been considering for some time now to get started with creating a reef tank. I understand the basics of live rock, lighting, tank necessitates, etc, but have a few questions.

First question is how can I cat proof an aquarium? My goal is to get a 55 gallon and I've heard lids are not the best idea with the reef aquariums. Would a glass or mesh lid impact the lighting to a great extent?

Second question is where can I find good, affordable lighting for a reef aquarium. I understand you get what you pay for my budget is around $500 or so for the full setup (not including fish). Could someone help me point me in the right direction of if that's possible and what supplies I could get that fit that budget?

Last question is can I put the lights directly against the hood (glass or mesh) or does it need to be suspended about 8 inches above?

I hope these questions are too dumb but I want to make sure I can do this right before getting into the hobby.

Thanks!

Advice on breaking down a tank?

Posted: 03 May 2020 04:43 PM PDT

So I recently upgraded from a 5g fluval evo to the 20g innovative marine. The 5g still has two big rocks and the substrate. Should I try to save the sand and rocks? How to I take the rocks out and save them for future use without having something that will stink up wherever I store them? Im just not sure what to do with it, I know I want to keep the tank just in case I wanna use it again. I have a feeling I just have to throw away the rock and sand and if I ever wanna start again I'll have to buy new stuff. Any advice would be great!
