| Posted: 06 May 2020 12:23 AM PDT I thought people were crazy saying their aquariums stink but my goldfish tank's water definitely has an odor. It doesn't stink, but it's got that distinct "something lives in this water" smell that can be found in nature. Not stagnant water, that's it's own kind of bad. But there is an odor. My water parameters are good. Ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate around 10 after a week right before I do a 40% water change. pH is about 8.2 - 8.4. I just picked up a water hardness test but haven't used it yet but we do have hard water. Am I just smelling the minerals? I currently have 2 large sponge filters but am adding a canister filter in a couple days as well, it just shipped out from Amazon this evening. My other two tanks with tropical community fish don't have any odor and one of them I have to change the water twice as often to keep nitrates at an acceptable level because of an explosion of mystery snails. | Tank size and stocking questions :) Posted: 05 May 2020 10:50 PM PDT From your experiences, would you say that a fantail, black moor, and ryukin should get along okay? I've only kept fantails in the past and have read a few times now that ryukins can be a bit more aggressive. I just want to make sure that the fantail and black moor would be okay. Perhaps I'm being overly cautious. And if I were to get one of each variety, what size tank would you recommend? Would a 75 gallon be okay forever or would I eventually need to upgrade? | Posted: 05 May 2020 05:03 PM PDT I currently have 3 small fancies (2 ranchus and 1 oranda) in a 20 gal tank. I'll also be taking in a telescope goldfish from my dad. I know I'll need to up the tank size when I add him, and as all of them get bigger. What's a good tank size for these lads? I want to take really good care of them, my fish mean a lot to me. I'm still relatively new to this, I've kept fish my whole life but this is my first time having fancies and having a tank that's bigger than 10 gallons lol. So any advice is appreciated, thank you! | First goldfish quarantine questions Posted: 05 May 2020 12:24 PM PDT Hello All, I've just invested in my first fancy goldfish and am currently cycling my 30 gallon tank before it arrives (its still in China). I am curious about quarantining. I have read that since this is my first and only fish a QT isn't necessary, but probably a good idea to get off to a clean start. That being said, can I just quarantine my fish in my main tank rather than a separate QT tank since I'm not protecting any other fish? By QT I mean doing the saltwater treatment for parasites and any other preventative treatments (open to recommendations). Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] | ||

| Comet Goldfish Nitrate and Nitrite a little higher than where I want it to be Posted: 05 May 2020 03:22 PM PDT Hi guys! I unfortunately don't have the exact numbers from the water test I did at petsmart, but overall my goldfish "nitrite and nitrate levels were just a bit above the normal levels, but nothing too bad if it isnt stressing her out" as the petsmart employee said. I have a 20 gallon tank and I do a 30% water change every week. My goldfish does produce a lot of waste as any goldfish does and I do everything I can to keep it as clean as I can during water changes. I usually clean the top surface of the sand gravel first, then stir up the first inch of sand, let it settle and then pick up whatever is still floating with my gravel vacuum. I upgraded my filter that was for 20 gallons to a 30 gallon filter in hopes of keep the water cleaner. I use water primer and bacteria supplements every water change. I have 5 snails that help keep the tank clean too. I also feed her twice a day and only give her a finger full of pellets that she usually inhales in under a minute or so. Her other tank parameters are good and within tolerance. She doesn't appear stressed, she is still doing her typical foraging and swimming around. So I'm coming to you guys for advice on how to keep the Nitrate and nitrite levels down. Since they're right above the okay limit, I'm not sure what to do besides more water changes. Any advice helps and I'm happy to give any more information that helps! [link] [comments] | ||

| Posted: 05 May 2020 06:18 AM PDT Hi everyone, I have a massive black moor who bottom sits with clamped fins. She usually has cloudy eyes, even though water quality is good. Given these symptoms, after many weeks of frequent water changes, I treated my whole 55g for gill flukes. The day after the meds go in (PraziPro), she looks great! Her eyes clear up and she swims happily around the tank. But then as soon as I do a water change a few days later and remove the medication, we go right back to square one with bottom sitting, clamped fins, and the cloudy eyes come back. My other fish (smaller male ryukin) has absolutely no outward signs of distress. Has anyone experienced this? Do I just need to do more rounds of Prazi? Is the Prazi not strong enough? Thanks!
