New Here - Got my new fish yesterday Posted: 02 May 2020 05:42 AM PDT No issues, just saying hi and giving you my story... I have a large greenhouse and inside it a pond (above ground for thermal mass as I don't heat the greenhouse nor cool it during the seasons) and a few years back I got some fish (some fat fancies and koi) and things were great for a while but something went wrong and fast - killed all my fish. My local koi club sent their person out to help but they were stumped... could not isolate the cause but it was likely pathogenic (over the course of months I had consistently tested water parameters but things held healthy and steady) - anyway, i lost them all... so I gave up. No more fish. The koi club said to let the pond just be - a year or so and remove the plants that have soil as they can often carry pathogens and other nasties - and I had given up so I didn't care but it's been three now and I got the itch again because of this stupid group (I say that in love) - and all your stupid beautiful fish. So I ventured out to a reputable koi seller locally and got five koi. I put my fish in the pond in bag to begin acclimation and after that process and testing their water and the pond water things looked good. I released them and they were eager to be out. They immediately congregated around something... I looked closer and it was a fat fancy tail Goldie! In my pond??? WTH???? About two years ago we fostered an Oranda that needed a new home. I said sure, toss it in... what do I care.... the part of my soul that loved fish had died. It's been in there this whole time and I never once saw it and its big and fat and waddles around like a goofball. It seems in fine health but had I known I would have taken further precautionary steps to make sure no one gets sick. Anyway, I'm in the greenhouse now... unable to see my fish because its still too dark but wanted to say hello and give my story as I guess I'm back in the club on a probationary pass. I really hope things go well this time... my water continues to be around 8pH and the ammonia, nitrates and so on are all quite low according to the tests (I admit I should get newer ones though... but i use the water out of the pond to irrigate my garden so the pond water is refreshed about every 2 weeks... a little every day). It is a 2500 gallon pond. I do no have plans to add more fish... I tend to collect too easily so I got five and hold there. Off to water the garden. [link] [comments] | ||
