[ADVICE]Should I get a deeper substrate? I'm fighting with the water quality

Posted: 02 May 2020 12:57 AM PDT

I bought the tank set up but it only came with a half inch of large pebbles. I have two blackmoors, 12 guppies, 4 snails, 2 tiny plecos in a 47 gallon tank with a brand new filter. Maybe I need a bigger one? I keep having bacterial blooms and algae blooms and every common pest. One after another

It's the highest maintenance tank I've had and I've had quite a few aquariums. I change the water twice a week and there's just one problem after another. Am I vacuuming the gravel too much? Is it cause there isn't any live plants? I keep getting one problem after another even though I clean it and test the water. I don't know how to stabilize it. I need advice. Thanks.

Molly is gonna be a scrappy one... Lol.

Posted: 01 May 2020 10:57 PM PDT

So i recently added two tiny baby pearlscales to my tank. Stalk me a bit for video. These two babies are Molly and Bogie. Tonight before i went to bed, i gave the tank a little snack. I have several different types and sizes of goldfish pellets mixed up that I feed from.

Some of these pellets are way way too big for the little ones.

I have another goldie in the tank named Juice. She's gotta be 5"+.

Molly suddenly flies across the tank at full speed, slams right into Juice, pushing her out of the way, and she grabs this huge pellet and just hauls ass back to the other side of the tank.

I was laughing my ass off, especially when she realized the pellet was too big and she let it go.... Lol. I didn't know those tiny, stubby fins could swim so fast!

Has anyone come across white dots down the lateral line? It’s only on one side. No other symptoms. Not on other fish.

My Fancy keeps going behind the filter and he looks like he’s getting stuck

Posted: 01 May 2020 08:10 PM PDT

I have to nudge the filter for him to swim away. He just started doing this today how do I get him to stop I don't want something bad to happen while I'm asleep tonight. What can I do.

Black Moor Help

Posted: 01 May 2020 04:43 PM PDT

I recently got a black moor and he's in a 10gal tank. He (or she who knows) only stays at the top of tank and whenever he tries to swim down he immediately floats back up. I tried to feed him a pea but he refused to eat it. I think he may have a bit of fin rot too or damage from the pet store. My temp is at 70 and all of my levels are normal except ammonia which is 0.25 but I'm doing daily partial water changes. Any suggestion? Thanks :)

Finally starting my goldfish aquarium! Questions about setup

Posted: 01 May 2020 07:15 PM PDT

Hello friends! Since I have so much extra time on my hands I've decided to finally start up my first goldfish aquarium!

I have a few questions:

- Is a 40 gallon suitable for 3 fancies or is that too small? I keep reading conflicting information.

- Should I use large river rocks or pool filter sand for the substrate? I know goldfish love to dig, does having large river rocks affect them at all (since they can't really dig through)?

- I chose the Marineland C-530 canister filter. I'm going to end up with something 40-70 gallons, is that suitable? It says it turns over 500 gph but that seems really high for the price, so I just want to make sure it's a good filter. If anyone has used this filter before I'd love to hear how it runs.

- Any recommendations for a good bottom feeder/scavenger? Maybe some sort of loach?

If you guys have any other tips for starting out I would really appreciate it! I have kept fish for a few years now, but never goldfish so I'm really excited :)

Is there a doctor in the house?

Posted: 01 May 2020 07:05 PM PDT

Fish = 1 large fancy, 1 large common, 1 very small black Moore, 2 African dwarf frogs, 4 mystery snails.

Tank= 65 gallon

Water= I change the water often, water tests indicate normal range for pH, ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites.

Problem= The two large goldfish seem absolutely miserable. No visible signs of diseases but they're tucking their fins and constantly scraping themselves on the gravel and aquarium ornaments. I don't know how to help cause I don't know what is wrong.

Question= Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I be looking for something?

Any suggestions are very appreciated. I adore my fish and want them to be happy and healthy. They've been exhibiting the miserable-ness for about 2 weeks.

Sand or gravel? Best type of plants for comet/sarasa Goldie's?

Posted: 01 May 2020 06:59 PM PDT

Hello! Sorry this is long, if you don't want to hear my life story skip ahead to where I say start here 😂. I'm relatively new to the aquatic world (and Reddit), I started a pond last summer and just bought feeder goldfish at the time to start out with because I wanted to work out the kinks with the pond before investing in expensive fish. So I grabbed some $0.30 fishies and had to replenish the stock twice for various reasons (local wildlife having a snack, had a big heatwave at one point and then a few days later a big temp drop) and somehow at the end of the summer some of them lived. I didn't feel that the pond was winter ready yet, so I just decided to winter the survivors inside.

When I brought them in (there were 12 survivors) all I had was a 40gal and I wasn't sure if that was enough, so I called my local pet store, and the lass was like "I'm sure it's fine if it's just for the winter." 🙄 While housing them inside I tried to introduce a couple of tank buddies like a couple of mystery snails, which survived about a month before they were eaten, and then a clown plec, who I'm assuming ended up dying of starvation because the goldfish were eating all his food before he could find it... It's been a bit tragic.

ANYWAY, all this time, these betches have survived a lot as I'm learning... I went on a 7 week trip and they survived my MIL and zero water changes (one casualty here), a ginormous algae bloom due to the tank being right in front of a window 😬, and ofc an over crowded tank...

SO, here I am, with these tough ass betches, who were all THRIVING for whatever reason, until today. I came downstairs to feed them and instead of the usual feisty feed me dance that I usually get from the whole school, I got some half hearted fin waves from half the flock, and the other half were just chillin at the bottom of the tank, basically resting their little bellies right on the gravel at the bottom. And I was like "they will liven up once I give them some munchies." So I gave them quarter of their usual dose and I did not get the reaction I was expecting, the ones who were still swimming around sucked up a couple of pellets and then spat them back out again, while the others had their backs turned and barely reacted. So I put in a little more and one of the resters had a spurt of energy and sprinted around the tank and ate some pellets but in general they were not behaving normal.

So, I called up the local pet store again to hopefully get some answers. (Pet Store Lass= PSL) PSL:it sounds to me like there are too many fish in the tank and they don't have enough oxygen. Me: what? The tank is huge, they have so much room, and at the start of the winter y'all said 40 gal was fine? PSL: Well, as the fish get bigger the more space and oxygen they will need, do you have a bubbler in the tank? Me: what is that? PSL: Explanation Me: can I come pick one up? PSL: you must order it online.

The rest of the day consisted of me trying to separate the fish into two 4 gal and the 40gal tank with the two filters I have and with the purchase of a new filter and a bubbler. But as I began to do more research on here, on Reddit, I am coming to the realization that it will not be enough. So I went out and bought a 55 gal storage container and plan on splitting the fish between the tank and the container.

START HERE:

11 goldfish, uneducated newbie goldfish momma, fish are for pond, were wintered indoors in a forty gal tank cause the PSL said that was fine, fish are SURVIVORS, but today they started showing signs of stress, bought 55 gal storage bin, plan to split fish between bin and tank 6/5, I'm out of my depth, I need help. Please be kind. Pond will be ready in approx 1.5 mo.

What I need to know, sand or gravel? What type of sand if sand? Best plants for sarasa/comets? They like broccoli, but how often is safe to give them? I've tried other veggies but they don't care for them as much as the Broc. Other than weekly water changes, how can I help my fishies live their best lives? I love these little betches and I don't want them to die, any advice is welcome, just please be nice. ♥️

Lethargy during breeding season

Posted: 01 May 2020 08:16 AM PDT

Hi all, I have two large fancy goldfish in a 55 gallon tank. The male ryukin always swims happily around the tank, foraging. But my female black moor goldfish (who is large, around 9-10 inches) stays primarily in one corner of the tank. My water params are fine, except the well water I must use for PWCs is already 30 ppm nitrates out of the faucet. Zero ammonia and nitrite. My filter does 550 gal/hour. And I have a large corner sponge filter. Also, this fish always has cloudy eyes, and while she's in the corner, her dorsal fin is clamped. She will move from the corner and take a lap around the tank, but not often, only if I walk by the tank and she thinks there might be food coming. I will say something very similar to this happened last breeding season, if that's important. Does anyone have any ideas to how I can help her? Thanks in advance!
