Sudden colony death?

Posted: 30 Apr 2020 04:20 AM PDT

So as the title says, I just had a colony of about 30 or so ghost shrimp (with a few whiskers as well) get entirely wiped out save one in a night. The night before everything was normal, except I added some new bamboo to the tank. I've used bamboo shoots aa decorations from this store before with no issues, even in this tank. When I woke up they were all dead and the betta that shares the tank with them was swimming around looking distressed. I rescued him and the one surviving shrimp and they're doing fine now.

I can't figure out what happened in the tank? No sign of anything funky on the bamboo or in the tank, and water levels all tested fine. What could wipe out 30 shrimp at once like that with no sign?

What are those white dots on the tail? Any ideas? Others have them too, but not all at the same spot, some even symetrical
