Any idea what causes this sometimes erratic behavior? An itch? At least 50%+ water changes per week. 125gal /FX6

Any experts willing to consult on my setup? I’ve been out of the hobby for a few years, but am diving back in given COVID-19. I’ve got this guy heading my way in a week and would love advice/someone to bounce ideas/answer any questions that arise!

Polyester quilt batting as bio wool?

Posted: 08 Apr 2020 08:57 AM PDT

Hey all! I'm currently running a Marina i110 filter, which has a little slotted cartridge inside it. It's built like a sandwich (mechanical bits inside, contained in 2 thin layers of polyester wool) with water running up inside it and out through the wool.

To be honest, the volume of filter material is pathetically small, and there's loads of empty wasted space between the cartridge and filter box itself. I'm planning to use that wasted space and add much more bio media (poly bio wool cut to slot in). I'm just wondering though - what do you guys think about using thick polyester quilting batting? It's pretty much identical to bought filter wool! Has anyone used poly batting (or even poly toy stuffing) as bio media before?

Eventually I'm going to do away with the tiny little cartridge and use my own layers of media, the filter box has a pretty decent internal volume :)

Raised from egg, they are starting to deferentiate their colours. Unexpectedly Cain has remained platinum white and you can still see his organs in the light.

Seeking Opinions of Expert Goldfish Owners

Posted: 07 Apr 2020 10:28 PM PDT

Several months ago, I made an impulse decision and bought the fancy goldfish you see in the attached video. I bought a 2.5 gallon Aqueon tank setup to house it, and I had no idea the extensive requirements of keeping goldfish until about a month into my owning it. Ever since then, I have periodically felt guilty about not upgrading her to a 10 gallon tank, as she deserves. However, after all this time of taking extra good care of her and making sure her tank is as clean as possible, I'm not sure how necessary a tank upgrade really is. I do regular, small water changes to cope with the increased ammonia concentration, and a 40-50% water change once every couple months. I clean up any poop or food scraps at least once every other day. I do water tests every few weeks that show near perfect values, and I add in a nitrate reducing, pH balancing solution with the major water changes, as well as aquarium salts. The filter breaks surface tension and has a waterfall effect that should be oxygenating the water (I tried out an air pump but it was too powerful for this tiny tank). Theres an anubias nana plant that thrives, as well as a wall of hornwort that she enjoys knocking loose from the substrate (part of the reason I'm always doing repairs and cleaning the tank). I have observed her gulping air from the surface, but she definitely does not rely on this practice for breathing, and I have not identified any signs of swim bladder disease (or any other ailment, for that matter) in the past year. I feed her 3 different types of pellets, as well as the occasional boiled peas and carrots. I've even done some training exercises with her in the past, not so much anymore but she still knows the feeding stick! Not to forget that she's grown beautifully and her colors are amazingly vivid and profound. However, I do feel bad that she might enjoy more space and another companion, and I realize that it's very hard to tell if your fish is suffering or not. The problem is that I leave for college soon, and I don't want to invest in a larger setup without the guarantee that it will be properly maintained while I'm gone. I am fairly certain that a 10 gallon tank with multiple fish (I would get one more fancy goldfish since I've had success keeping this one in a measly 2.5 gal) and loads of plants would not be cleaned, tested, nor truly cared about by my family. There's no way that they would switch from always making fun of me for my devotion/addiction to becoming invested in this fish themselves.

Edit: Amazon orders going out tomorrow morning. I'll have to make goldfish lovers out of my younger sisters before I leave. Also, just now reading rule #6 for this sub....

Picture for attention. I am putting in a 300g pond for the fancies I am no longer grooming up for show, to make room for my new projects like this guy. What is one thing you wished you knew before you put in a pond?

Desperately looking for some help for my Goldie :( for about three weeks now he's been having swim bladder issues, he's eating fine and trying his best to get around but floating mostly at the top of the tank and has white/clear stringy poop! What looks like carp pox just started popping up as well

Weird question

Posted: 07 Apr 2020 07:10 PM PDT

I have (had?) three small goldfish in a 40g tank, and one of them suddenly disappeared. We have looked all over the tank, the floor, the floating plants and no fish, dead or alive. Has anyone had this happen? We are really scratching our heads over here.

Re-purposing a shoe deodorant ball?

Posted: 07 Apr 2020 12:47 PM PDT

I have a plastic shell of a deodorizer ball that I think would make a great toy for the chonkers. It has a bunch of small holes that food can fall out of when they push it, it's perfect! The only thing is it's original function was holding a chalk like deodorant for a year or more.

If I clean it our really well with soap & hot water, then rinse the hell out of it, will it be safe for my aquarium? Is there anything I can do to make sure it's safe for my aquarium? It's kind of exactly what I'm looking for and has a neat locking/unlocking mechanism that would be beyond me to recreate, but perfect for food delivery.

How many water changes on a 50 gallon with 2 fancy gold fish?

Posted: 07 Apr 2020 06:02 PM PDT

Hey guys so I really want to get 2 Oranda gold fish. The absolute biggest tank I could get is a 50 gallon. I saw online a lot of people doing 50% water changes every week but I would rather not use so much water weekly if possible. I'm wondering how much water I would have to change per week with a 50 gal with 2 Orandas, I am planning on having 2 sponge filters and a 525 GPH canister filter. I was also thinking of adding in some live plants and possibly putting in some pothos at the top of the tank to remove nitrates. So with all this would I be able to do around 20% per week or is that way too low? What are your suggestions?

Help for my fantail goldie, Spielberg!

Posted: 07 Apr 2020 04:49 PM PDT

Hi everyone,

Looking for some help for my fantail goldfish, Spielberg. Spielberg has been dealing with SBD (or assumed SBD) for about a month now. His tankmate, Hitchcock, is totally fine. They have a 10G tank, a filter, and a bubbler. I check their water parameters at least 1x a week.

We feed Spielberg boiled+shelled peas roughly every other day now, as that seems to be the only thing that helps him regain his balance and swim ~somewhat~ normally. He still has the tendency to float back to the top, but he isn't on his side and can swim down to the bottom of the tank. But every other day without fail, we'll wake up to find the little guy floating on his side at the top of our tank. I treated him with API General Cure which didn't really do anything. What can I do to help Spielberg?

I bought this cutie yesterday as a “lionhead ranchu”, but he sure doesn’t look like any of the ranchu pics I see on here! Any insight? Could he just be very young?
