Think I starved my Mystery Snail... could he bounce back?

Posted: 27 Apr 2020 04:46 PM PDT

I feel absolutely horrible. Got a Golden Mystery Snail the other day. My son named him Chario (Char-ee-oh). He had been living happily(I hope) with our Betta in a 5.5 gallon Fluval Chi tank, heated to 78-80 degrees. Regular water changes and PH checked out ok.

The first week or so we had him he was cruising around like a mad man, every hour he was somewhere new, had tons of energy and crawled on everything.

All of a sudden, last week Friday, he stops moving more than an inch a day. He's was still tightly inside his shell most of the time and would only pop open about 15% to stick his antenna out once and a while. Certainly a dramatic change from how he had been behaving.

I panic. Start researching and find out i'm a huge POS and probably have been starving this little dude. The fish place said "oh he can eat the same pellets that our one betta gets and algae" which seemed wrong/odd when I heard it. I should have immediately researched their diets but I didn't, so this is all on me.

So the other night I couldn't sleep. kept thinking of Chario and what could be wrong. I got up, googled snail diets, went downstairs, blanched some spinach and dropped it in. One of the leaves fell right on top of Chario. Like he had a spinach magnet. When I woke up in the morning, Chario was 80% out of his shell and literally had his whole foot wrapped around the spinach leaf. Like a bear snail hug! There were no visible chucks taken out of the leaf, but he definitely looked like he was mouthing it (had to google where his mouth was but I can 100% confirm this now)

Now, after about 5 hours of spinach love, Chario is tightly closed up in the his shell, has been for the last two hours or so. In there tighter than I have ever seen him close his little trap door.

It sure appears like he was starving, got his grub on, and is now passed out recouping.

I came here because I have fallen in love with this little guy and I want to ask if my assessment is accurate. I fully understand how many variables there are to consider in any water critter situation but Im hoping that with the info provided, someone might be able to add insight or ease my mind.

I really dont want this little guy to die... especially not as a result of my negligence. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Question about cleaning tanks

Posted: 27 Apr 2020 12:35 PM PDT

Hi guys. I have a pretty noob question about cleaning tanks. My snails and fish make a lot of feces. I vacuum it up with a siphon when I do water changes. However, I can never vacuum up all the waste without draining too much water from my tank. It's 10 gallons, for reference.

How do you get around this issue? Would it be advisable to vacuum up water and waste, then add the water back in...?

Caught the very beginning of a blue green bloom. Removed what I could and did a 50% change. Wasn’t enough. Anyone use this? Rabbit snail safe?

My snails shell is deteriorating help

Posted: 27 Apr 2020 10:47 AM PDT

So I have 3 mystery snails in a 10 gallon tank with a betta fish. I feed them cucumbers. So one one my snail's shells has a hole it's in and I picked it up to look at it and some more of its shell flaked off, it's had a tiny hole since I got it but it's getting bigger. My other 2 snails are thriving and I just don't know what wrong with that one. Before you ask unfortunately I don't know the ph or really anything about the water I wasn't able to get one before the quarantine hit
