Used some leftover hardscape from my main aquarium and bought some new plants for this Walstad Jarrarium.

1st timer looking for tips

Posted: 07 Mar 2020 03:15 AM PST

So I've been watching videos and taking notes. Here is what I believe I need for my first creation. Please let me know if I'm missing anything. (I'm going for simple for my first one)

  1. Suitable container (glass)
  2. Soil (the video I watched has a special combination that I plan to use. I will also take other suggestions, or, if there is a pre mix I can buy that would be ideal)
  3. Create a false bottom (or buy one)
  4. Gather moss & plans suitable for the jar size
  5. Assemble. (I have a video for this too, I will also take any other suggestions)

All in all, I believe I've got it for the basics, but I welcome any tips from others with more experience, also some advice on caring for it when it's new. I water generously and seal, right? Perhaps water it a bit more until the plans really get going? And do they all need direct sunlight or a lamp? :D

Has anyone else’s shrimp changed color after moving them into their jar? My amano was clear and now he’s brownish and has spots and stripes.

Anyone have an idea why the bark is rooting into the soil? I didn’t know bark could do that!

One month update. Frequent water changes from the excessive sunlight causing green water but everything is starting to take off! Mirco Sword is even sending runners, which haven't in my actual aquarium.

Trouble with detritus worms

Posted: 06 Mar 2020 06:20 PM PST

I have a 1 gallon with a ramshorn. Things were going well for almost 2 months until about a week ago when a boom of detritus worms and flatworms were showing up on my walls.

I usually do a 25% water change on Wednesdays and a 50% change on Saturday. I feed the ramshorn once or twice a week, other wise its just grazing on what's growing on the sides of the tank. The substrate is sand, I've been using extra airline tubing to do my water changes since its the only thing I can find other than the large gravel vacs.

I do have a DIY airstone filter in it.

I don't mind having the worms in my tank but the numbers are getting silly.
