[Help] Can high nitrates crash an entire tank two days?

Posted: 16 Feb 2020 10:29 PM PST

Hi all,

Pretty devastated writing this. We had a 55l tank with 2 pipefish, 2 seahorses and 2 blennies which has crashed this weekend. So far, we've lost a pipefish, a seahorse and a blenny but the remaining fish look pretty sick. We performed two 25% water changes in the last three weeks.

The pipefish and blenny were dead when woke on Saturday morning. The tank is only about six weeks old and the fish were displaying some very strange behavior before they died. The pipefish looked to be having fits or seizures. We're brand new to this so brought a sample of the water to the store where we bought the tank and they said the problem was high levels of nitrates due to overfeeding. They recommended 30% water changes every other day for the next week. We performed the first water change last night but woke up to another dead seahorse who was also having what looked to be seizures yesterday evening.

Is it possible for high nitrates to crash an entire tank over a weekend or could something else have been at play?

Daughter dumped whole thing of fish food in tank, wish me luck!

Sigh... this is the second time she's done this. She is 4 and nonverbal autistic. She is downright devious and has done about $7,000 worth of damage to non fish tank things in the past two years. The fish room is locked but due to a weird set of circumstances it ended up unlocked. Wife and daughter left and I went for walk with son, took stroller out of room and left it unlocked and they came home before I came home. Of course I'm kicking myself. This tank was set up in there to keep it away from here and yet, here I am...

So, its a 125G soft coral tank, thats a plus. Another plus is I just *happened* to have 80 gallons of RODI water on hand that I am mixing tonight. By tomorrow morning I will have another 20 gallons of RODI water, but I will only use the 80.

The filter socks captured a lot and I managed to catch a lot with the net (came in right after). The water is awful right now and is opaque. Fun stuff.

My plan is: 80 gallons tomorrow + thorough sand + rock cleaning

40 gallons maybe Wednesday, and 40 on the weekend.

Is that overkill? I saved the other tank she did this too, it is a freshwater tank.

Yes, I am getting more locks. Wish me luck!

Looking for suggestions on upgrading my lights.

Posted: 16 Feb 2020 03:10 PM PST

Currently, I've got a couple of 8 year old light strips, which have been fine, but I'm looking to upgrade to a slightly better lighting setup. What would you guys and gals suggest?

It's a 150L tank and the lights need to fit under the lid. I'm in the UK. Budget-wise, I'd rather not buy the most expensive option, but willing to pay a reasonable amount for a decent product. If I missed any other info, please let me know.

Thanks in advance :)
