Is it normal for a black/brown goldfish to change color like this? The orange has been slowly showing up over the past month

Tank mate options for Ryukin?

Posted: 16 Feb 2020 05:58 PM PST

I would like to buy a ryukin at some point. An article I was reading online said they should never be kept with any single tailed goldfish...does anyone know why this is?

Anyone ever successfully kept both together?

Thank you for the help!

Treating cotton fungus?

Posted: 16 Feb 2020 03:39 PM PST

I'm having trouble clearing a cotton fungus infection in my goldie tank. One especially has a ton on his tail and he's been fighting it for months, a second is just showing signs. I've tried general cure, pimafix, and now trying aquarium salt. I keep the tank clean and feed them well, and I've tried gently rubbing off some of the sports to try to get to the base of the issue, but I'm at my wit's end!! Any other ideas?? I also don't have a hospital tank atm because I rescued some bettas that a neighbor was just going to let die when they moved started and needed a place for them.

Drastic Nitrate Drop?

Posted: 16 Feb 2020 02:10 PM PST

I have two shubunkins in a 29 gal. My tap water has super high nitrates (it's tested at 40/80 ppm) and I thought I would have to live with it. I usually do a 50/70% water change each week but was unable to do one last week. When I tested for nitrates today, it dropped dramatically to about 5ppm. I added some snake wood about 3 weeks ago and some dwarf clover. I don't know if this causes the test to be wrong, or if my new seachem conditioner is REALLY working. Or was I disturbing the tank by doing such big water changes? Any thoughts? PS: I do plan to move them to a 100gallon stock tank in a few weeks.

Gravel vs. Trauma

Posted: 16 Feb 2020 09:46 AM PST

My son won a goldfish at the fair that came home in a plastic container only slightly larger than a chinese take-out container. Here we are a few years later and the goldfish is now 7 inches long. I think we have done a pretty good job taking care of him (got him the big tank, filtration, lighting, and a couple friends) but until coming on this sub I had no idea gravel was bad for goldfish! I am just so shocked not one of the guides or pet store employees mentioned it. Our fair friend does not do well with change. When we were getting the new tank set up I thought we would lose him before we even moved him in to the new tank- just moving the old tank to a different position traumatized him.
I am very nervous to remove the gravel because he has had gravel his entire life and I think the change might flip him our again... but I am also worried to keep something in there that could be dangerous for him.

Which is more dangerous- the gravel or the trauma?

Need help!

Posted: 16 Feb 2020 03:44 AM PST

Hello, need some guidance and advice. I've recently bought myself an oranda, I've got other fish however orandas I've realised are quite special in their own way

His name is crouchie and at the moment he is on his own. Hes only very young at the moment Is that good or does he need company?

Hes in a 30 litre tank with a filter and heater at 25°c. The tank is not too overcrowded with a few live plants dotted around and an ornament in the middle which his likes to swim though.

I've tried to find a bottom feeder for help with the waste however is proving quote difficult. So far I've had 4 cherry shrimp but all have died as where I got them from were not up to scratch. I then tried 2 aroma shrimp however neither of them survived because I soon realised they are cold water shrimp. I have been recommended to try any type of catfish

I simply want advice to what I'm doing wrong or what I could improve on. Any information is greatly appreciated.

I hope to in August to upgrade him to a bigger 75 litre tank

Thankyou!
