Waiting for breakfast: a photographic essay

I've never had fish before, but when I found out about Fancy Goldfish, I just had to have them! So, this is my first ever tank and after months of setup, it finally got its first two additions this week.

Just bought a new tank for my two little fry, 110l should do them till I can afford a nice long tank. After some advice on live plants and goldfish, peoples experiences with what works best. Using sand substrate dont mind rooting plants. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

How to tell my fish is healing from its rot fin disease?

Posted: 25 Feb 2020 08:08 PM PST

Hello!

My telescopic goldfish has developed rot fin in its tail, which alarmingly ate away at the upper 'fantail' of its tail quickly. (Caught it because I stupidly and unawarely introduced a rosy red that carried the disease.)

Luckily I caught it in time, transferred it to an bowl, and immediately put it on medicine for rot fin. That stopped the progress of the disease. It's been three days!

However I want to keep track of it before putting it back into the main tank (who is in the progress of being cleaned). So how do I know when it's safe to put my fish back?

When it no longer has these white edge to its fins?

Arthur Update

A thirteen day difference and not in the right direction...

I get that they get ill and things happen that you can't control, but this guy means so much to me, and the stress I'm going through with him is making me question whether I want to keep fish. I hate seeing him struggling (he's not really), and the idea of him being in pain hurts me too.

Melafix Debate

Posted: 25 Feb 2020 09:43 AM PST

I'm just wondering why people are so against it when it's recommended by vets? I get some say it's 'snake oil', but surely if that was the case it wouldn't be a first line treatment? Genuinely curious and not trying to start an argument or anything, just trying to figure out why.
