Meet Pippin and bandit (He's kinda dumb but we love him anyways)

My first batch of baby comets! Hatched Sept. 10th. I have a 12,000 gallon pond for the parents but the babies are in a 75 gallon until they get bigger.

The best part of my day is watching them feed.

Seachem Flourite Black Sand & Goldfish

Posted: 24 Nov 2019 10:09 PM PST

Does anyone have any experience housing goldfish with Seachem Flourite Black Sand? Is it safe for goldfish? Like wouldn't the goldfish sift through it looking for food and possibly intake some of it and ultimately get sick or even die? They don't look like fine sand particles (which they aren't they are extra extra small clay pieces). Any information is helpful!

Would poo and waste get into the crevices of the pebbles? I want to do something like this but worried it would end up being bad as you couldn’t vacuum or have any way of cleaning in between them

Black Moor X Fantail?

Posted: 24 Nov 2019 04:22 PM PST

My black Moor goldfish and Fantail goldfish mated and produced tons of eggs. Are they gonna hatch? Is it possible for a hybrid? How do hybrids look like? Thanks ~

Frayed fin edges on new Goldies, any suggestions? They won’t stay still for a photo, so here’s a video.

I’m still confused with my filter

Posted: 24 Nov 2019 06:15 PM PST

So I got an under gravel filter that came with the set I bought except it didn't have air stones with it and I can't find any that fits in it. I think it's like a discontinued product or something. Also the filter doesn't have anywhere to put carbon on it but normally UGFs have carbon so idk because it doesn't even say anything about having carbon with this filter I have. Can I use a UGF without carbon or air stones or nah?

My common goldfish is a slow eater, is it normal?

Posted: 24 Nov 2019 05:22 AM PST

When I feed Gyarados, my common goldfish, he usually does not rush to eat the food. He picks a small piece from my fingers, then proceeds to slowly "chew" his meal, waiting and sitting in a spot before looking for another piece. When he is done he proceed to swim around foraging and after a while he just happily swims around as usual. I've heard that goldfish should be swallowing a lot of food without even thinking about it, so I am starting to wonder if this is normal. Should I change his diet? Is this a sign of overfeeding? I feed him with flakes 3 times per day and he is not showing any other weird behaviours.

The ethics of fancy goldfish

Posted: 24 Nov 2019 12:46 AM PST

Edit for anyone who might feel obliged to react in a rude manner: I am not stating keeping fancy goldfish IS cruel per say. All I want is to hear some interesting input and opinions on this so I can further educate myself and get a better grasp on the subject. So, I beg you, don't come for me.

I've been keeping fancy goldfish for more or less 4 years and I've learned that those of us who keep and breed fhem often receive harsh critics from non-goldfish-keepers within the aquarium hobby. In Germany, there's a word directly translated to "cruelty breed", which according to the law includes several breeds of fancy goldfish, making them illegal to breed or sell in Germany. Now I've always been pro fancies, because to me a modified animal was not cruel to breed or keep as long as the animal a) doesn't suffer from its mere existence and b) does not have a lesser quality of life if kept and cared for in ideal conditions. That has always been my opinion up until now. However, a while ago I lost one of my most beloved fish (a butterfly telescope) to chronic swim bladder malfunction and another of my current fish is developing problems (not very bad but I can just tell the early signs are there). So that made me rethink and: I wonder if (NOT STATING IT DEFINITELY IS) it is arrogant and/or cruel in itself to think we have the right to modify and manipulate creatures just so they look pretty? I mean, even if they don't suffer and even if it's been done for centuries, just the fact that fancies don't live as long (although I know the fish don't care about that) and have the mere POSSIBILITY of increased health problems, all simply for our personal enjoyment? To me it seems wrong looking at it that way, and I hope no one feels offended, like I said I used to have a completely different view and I'm still not sure what to think. I might wanna stop keeping the more modified breeds and instead move towards the simpler ones. Idk, anyways, would love to hear some (peaceful) opinions.

Epsom salt bath tips?

Posted: 24 Nov 2019 11:51 AM PST

My sweet oranda Roxanne is constipated. I figured I'd give her an Epsom salt bath to try and relieve it and then not feed her til tomorrow (and feed her more greens). The internet says use half the tank water but I've got a 20 gallon and that seems like a lot to me, especially because I just did a 5 gallon water change. Would she be okay if I just used a gallon of her water? Or two gallons?
