Here is the place to post questions about pest ID, coral/fish ID, your cycle, or any other questions that generally wouldn't start up a conversation. If you have an interesting or unique question please create a new thread so everyone can discuss it in length!

These are some great resources for ID's of pests/algae.

I made a guide comparing the use of live or dry rock in a reef tank

Got this for 5$ from a local reefer. If you’ve never tried getting in touch with other reefers around you I would highly recommend it.

Looking for clean chaeto near boulder CO.

Posted: 27 Sep 2019 04:14 PM PDT

Starting up my first saltwater tank standard 10 gallon and using an old sump trying to keep it cheep. If there's a way to do that lol. anyone have some clean chaeto they don't need?? I might have some extra dry rock or sand to trade from a previous tank build that didn't work out due to space .(

Thanks in advance.

Adding an anemone??

Posted: 27 Sep 2019 10:21 AM PDT

Hello! I have recently set up my first saltwater tank and I'm loving it so far!! Right now I have it stocked with a pair of baby clownfish and inverts. I'm wanting to add an anemone for the little guys. Unfortunately I don't have a sump and am using a HOB filter right now. I know I'll need to add a protein skimmer and good lighting. I'm wondering if I even have the opportunity to add them with my HOB filter. Also I'm wondering if I will need anything else to keep them healthy. I do have a wave maker as well. Thanks!!

TLDR: What do I need to have for keeping anemone.

Large Reef Tank Setup Questions

Posted: 27 Sep 2019 06:43 AM PDT

Hey Everyone;

Basically I am upgrading from a 90G to a 280G Reef

The tank is 6 ft X 30 inches X 30 inches. The overflow is dead center in the middle.

I am making basically a "check list" of stuff im going to need so here it goes:

Powerheads:

I am leaning towards going with gyres on each of the sides, does anybody have an recommendation on what to use?

Return Pump:

I am looking for a suggestion for this guy. My sump is going to be about 10 ft away in another room so I am looking for something a little bit powerful and reliable.

Sump:

I think im going to use a 75 gallon and make my own sump. UNLESS the prefab sumps are better, but they are extremely pricey.

Skimmer:

I have a curve 7 right now, but im either going to run two curve 7s OR maybe run a 9 and my current 7 when my bioload reaches a higher number.

Any suggestions are welcome! thanks a ton in advance guys

Would this type of coral work in my 10 gal nano? (Link in body)

Posted: 27 Sep 2019 12:41 PM PDT

I received 5 pieces of this type of hard coral from my pediatrician's office. He just gave them to me lol.

They just seem way too big and I heard hard corals are tough for beginners. I've never touched corals before. I've only had a fowlr 10 gal nano.

What type of coral is in the photo and can I break it apart and place a small bit onto the live rock? Or would it be difficult to take care of this type of coral?

[ID/Help] Interested in purchasing a full setup for my first reef tank

Posted: 27 Sep 2019 10:14 AM PDT

I've been keeping freshwater tanks for years and have really been itching to get into reefs for a while. I've found what appears to be a pretty good deal on a full setup with livestock, but I wanted to find out if the things that are included will be beyond a beginner's capabilities. I've been trying to ID some of the coral with the resources provided on this sub, and I think I've found that there are a couple of zoa colonies and some type of leather coral (cabbage maybe?) both of which seem to be relatively simple to care for, but I'm kind of stumped with the rest.

Would anyone be able to provide guidance on how difficult it would be to restore the reef and the level of difficulty for care? It's a 75 gallon tank btw for scale. Let me know what other details I can provide.
