Getting the most out of low-tech setups?

I will try to keep this succinct as possible, but I have a lot to ask as I feel my tanks are surviving rather than thriving when it comes to plants.

First a 'brief' backstory. I've been keeping fish for about a year, doing my diligent research and making sure everything is up to par for my little fellas and gals. That said, it's only been in the last 3-4 months that I've started planting my tanks, mainly due to my ability to get them becoming easier. My first endeavor involved the PetSmart and some floating water sprite, and went poorly. It melted predictably, but proceeded to never return thereafter.

Attempt #2: 5.5g betta tank. Micro Swords, Val spiralis, a marimo ball, and Anubias barteri coffeefolia. Micro Swords were a mistake and die off. The val does okay, it spreads runners and propagates, but any leaves of any length just die off. Only things that seem to do okay with no real issue are the coffeefolia and the marimo ball. Tank is still active, same problem with the val to this day after about 4 months. I only get 2-3 inches of growth before they just melt off and grow back.

Attempt #3: 20g tall community tank, heavily stocked. More water sprite, this time from an online vendor. A bit is added to the betta tank as it comes in so nice. More val spiralis, a few marimo balls, a windelov java fern, some dwarf hairgrass, and some scarlet temple. This tank has been planted about a month now, and the val is exhibiting the same issue. Important to note that since planting the original betta tank I've moved to another state so the water parameters were entirely different from the initial planting to now, yet both tanks exhibit this. The sprite seems to be dropping roots, but also doesn't appear to be converting to broader leaves, at least in the 20g. The sprite in the 5.5g is converting, but also appears a bit less healthy overall. The hairgrass is rooting but doesn't appear to want to put out even the first runner, and my java fern doesn't appear to have grown at all. It does look like it tried to propagate, but I believe that propagation attempt died.

  • 5.5g runs an Aquaclear 20 for filtration, a Finnex Nano Planted for 10 hours a day, has seachem flourite and a small bit of crushed decorative shell in it, and is treated once weekly with 1ml Easy Green. Kept at ~78F. Paramaters: 8.2 PH (not sure how but more on that in a sec), 0ppm Ammonia, 0ppm Nitrite, 40ppm Nitrate, 100ppm KH/140ppm GH, and somewhere between .25/.5 ppm Phos
  • 20g runs an Aquaclear 30 (would prefer a 50 but space doesn't allow), a Finnex Planted+ 24/7 on its cycle, has seachem flourite over a bed of inert black gravel supplemented with root tabs, and is treated twice weekly with 2ml Easy Green and once weekly with 2ml of Easy Iron. Kept at ~78F. This tank is currently experiencing a mini cycle due to an issue with the filter that required the tank to be drained and moved. Paramaters 7.8 PH (same water as the 5.5), 0ppm Ammonia, 1ppm Nitrite (currently in a mini-cycle due to an issue that led to the tank having to be drained at the start of the week), 60ppm Nitrate, ~65ppm KH/50ppm GH, and again .25/.5ppm Phos

Both sets of parameters were taken today before the water changes.

I have a lot of questions, but hopefully someone can help me out with some of them. 1. What would cause my vals to melt back like this? Even now they have no issues propagating, they just refuse to grow long leaves. Anything past 2-3 inches as I said just causes that leaf to melt off, and another grows right back in its place as the plant chucks runners like everything is normal. 2. The water sprite in my 5.5 seem to be adapting to floating with broader leaves, but the 20g isn't. In both cases while it is rooting it also tries to sit an inch or so under the water save for the end of the stem where the roots are. Is this normal? I've not been able to find actual visual representations of floating water sprite online, though everything I've looked at says you can float it. 3. Given it's a low tech tank with no CO2, what can I do to encourage carpeting of my hairgrass? I only want a small corner of the tank carpeted, an area maybe about a foot long and a few inches deep. I have it spread out into 6 or 7 small tufts across the area. I know it will take time, but not sure what I should watch for as far as it doing well. 4. For the slower plant, like my java fern, how do I know if they're actually doing well? My marimos seem nigh unkillable fortunately, but the scarlet temple gives me conflicting signs of being a very bright pinkish red and simultaneously dropping leaves daily like they're worthless. Then of course I have the inert java fern that looks exactly as it did the day I bought it a month ago, so I have no idea whether it's getting all it needs or not.

I realize some of this may just boil down to impatience on my part, but knowing my history with non-aquatic plants I know I am not exactly an individual who has a green thumb. I appreciate anyone willing to read my short novella here and help me improve the conditions of my plants.
