The BIG myths and misidentification of Zoanthid toxicity.

Posted: 14 Aug 2019 02:03 PM PDT

I see it every day on here, people claiming all zoanthids are really toxic and A TON of misidentification esp when people refer to Zoanthus gigantus and kuroshio as a Palythoas.

That being said I am all about taking precautions, but the spread of misinformation is not doing the hobby any good.

Please have a read.

SaltSwap, a new salt water focused trading/selling sub

Posted: 14 Aug 2019 10:49 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I got permission to post about /r/SaltSwap a new sub focused on trading/selling salt water stuff.

A lot of people have been posting asking about a sub like it so I finally decided to make one. Its a community led sub and right now we are waiting to see how everyone responds to it before we go making a bunch of decisions on where we want to take it. There are a few rules in place, mostly around submitting posts.

There have been issues in the past with things like facebook (I dont think you can sell fish and stuff on there anymore) and other places, and salt trades get lost in other aquarium swap subs sometimes.

Please be friendly and feel free to let me know what you would like to see. Make a post, let us know where you are from and what you are wanting to trade!

How not to act at your LFS. No, didn't steal anything, just stuck her whole hand in for fun apparently?

Here it is with day lights on. Once everything’s grown in tank should look great. Home wrecker, TSA Twisted Sister, and Oregon Tort otw.

Did peppermint shrimp eat my frogspawn?

Posted: 14 Aug 2019 08:35 PM PDT

I'm finally adding coral to my 55 tank. I have a zoa and Xenia that I got a couple weeks ago that I think are doing well. The zoa has grown a couple more polyps since I added it. The Xenia seems fine (i don't really know how to tell if it's happy or not)

To be honest, I overdosed my calcium when I was trying to get it up, which dropped my alk pretty low. At one point it was at 480/6. I dosed up my alk to about 9 or 10, and I'm just waiting for my calcium to drop (which it's not) so right now my tank is at about 480/9.5. Phosphates are at 0.25

Possibly related, my testing today showed my nitrates at about 80 (I have no idea how that happened, my last water change was 10 days ago and I have a sump with chaeto and grapevine). I immediately water changed and plan on doing another early next week.

Sunday I got a frogspawn frag. Monday it seemed very shriveled up, but I thought it was just getting used to the tank. Tuesday it didn't get better, so I moved it thinking it needed better flow. Today, I found it not just shriveled up, but stripped down to its stony base, literally no evidence of any tentacles ever being there.

I have three peppermint shrimp that I got to deal with an aiptasia issue I had a while back. They're supposedly reef safe, but given what happened I can't help but think they ate my frogspawn.

Does anyone have any insight or advice here? Did I just get a bad frag, did my parameters kill it or was it my shrimp? If it's my shrimp I'm probably going to see if my LFS will take them, since I really don't want them getting in the way of me getting more coral.

TIA!

Freshwater and salt cyano the same?

Posted: 14 Aug 2019 07:48 PM PDT

Hey all, Ive been hearing all the chatter regarding the animals being killed by the blue/green algea freshwater cyanobacteria, and was wondering if anyone knew if it is the same strain as the red blooms we get in marine aquariums? If it is i am wondering if we are contributing to the cyano in the freshwater water column by doing our water changes. I couldnt find any information and wanted to discuss other options or opinions the sub may have.

I need sump/Refugium design advice

Posted: 14 Aug 2019 07:30 PM PDT

So I want to trade my HOB refugium out for a built in sump system and I'm looking for advice on best practices when doing so. Is there a problem having it setup prior to the filter sock and skimmer? If so how do you best incorporate it after those processes? I want to design it in a way that requires no additional equipment for the tank so it needs to be fed via the overflow/return pump. Currently I have an eshopps 6 gallon sump that I would like to keep using and the ideal plan would be to put the refugium in its own aquarium plumbed back to the sump. Best way I can think to do this is to run the display tank overflow directly into the refugium and allow that to then overflow into the sump but I'm worried I'll lose a significant portion, if not all, of the pods to my filtration.
