It’s so hard to get a good picture of this bowl but it’s my first go at a little shrimp haven :) it’s probably about 4 gallons. Maybe 1 month in, no shrimp yet

Beginner tips

Posted: 04 Aug 2019 06:31 AM PDT

Hi everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm moving to a new home and am looking to start a Jarrarium after inspiration from this sub but I have 0 experience and want to start with as much knowledge as possible. I have a few questions and would appreciate any answers, as well as general tips anyone has.

What size/shape of jar is best for a first jarrarium?

How do I source water/dirt/plants? I'm currently in the north of the Midwest and the local flora is deciduous forests, and we have a ton of ponds/rivers as my city sits right on a Great Lake. My instinct is to go to a pond by my house and just pick up some dirt, uproot a few plants I like, and bring home some small rocks and driftwood.

What type of lights are recommended? Have seen people discuss both LED and natural lights.

I'd love to have some small fish or shrimp within a year or so! Can I plan on that from the beginning, or will I need to see how things go?

Thanks so much for any and all help!

Does anyone have resources about creating a jarrarium with snails?

Posted: 04 Aug 2019 10:17 AM PDT

I'm looking to create a jarrarium with some snails, and I can't find anything super specific to snails online and I don't know where to start so I was wondering if ya'll could send some resources my way!

I haven't found a jar yet, so size recs would also be appreciated.

Also, I don't know if shrimp are possible to keep without a heater, but if they are, I'd be interested in including them as well :)

Snails in a Marimo jar?

Posted: 04 Aug 2019 09:23 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I've been lurking and I want to start a marimo jar, but I would also like some snails. Can snails be kept in a jar with just some marimo balls, or do they need other types of plants?

I'm sorry if this is a silly question, I haven't seen any just marimo ball jars with snails in them so far, so I wasn't sure.

I made another one, with sand and plants that I either had in tanks or had bought. I got snails from Petco for free because they didn't want them
