Update on Yampa River Jarrarium Posted: 14 Aug 2019 11:23 AM PDT | Hey all! Thanks for the tips on my first jarrarium, about a week and a half ago I scooped up some bladder snails and algae-covered rocks from the Yampa River into a 12oz glass and I've been having a ton of fun watching the snails. Jarrarium, with java moss, bladder snails, snail eggs, and baby snails Adult bladder snails with hours old hatchlings (white dots). Since then - The algae seems to be holding its initial state, growing just enough to keep up with the pace at which the snails are eating but not blooming out of control
- The snails have laid a ton of eggs, a lot of them hatched yesterday and are crawling around
- Lots of the tiny worms and water insect looking creatures have disappeared so the only visible life is the snails
- I got a small piece of java mass to help mitigate nitrogen issues
- Added a calcium supliment to keep those little shells hard
- A water change is coming
- I think the best way to approach this for such a small delicate jar would be to use a large straw to suck out most of the water an ounce or so at a time and add more spring water once it's as empty as I can get it with a straw but I'd love to hear from you guys if you have a better method.
What's next? - Thrifting a bigger jar ~1 gallon
- Filter - I'm guessing a bigger jar will require a filter so I don't have to change a gallon of water manually but I'd love to know if you guys have any suggestions to sidestep a proper filter such as something with airstones or more plants.
- Tiny Shrimp?!
- Maybe more breeds of larger freshwater snails
- Potentially a betta, I hear they get along well with snails
Next update will be coming in a couple weeks, happy jarring! submitted by /u/capitanphil [link] [comments] | |
