911 ASAP SOUTHERN INDIANA I have 4 malnourished axolotls that were surrendered to me that need to be re-homed immediately.

Posted: 14 Aug 2019 02:53 PM PDT

I recently had 4 axolotls surrendered to me a week ago. 1 confirmed male (dark wild STARBURST), 1 unsexed (barely) dirty leucy (this one may die very soon), 1 dark wild CONFIRMED female, and one unsexed high iridophore golden.

I was in a car accident 2 days ago and two discs in my lower back are herniated. I cannot possibly keep doing water changes with the pain that I'm in. I'm having a hard time walking.

These babies need to be re-homed immediately. As far as I can tell, they just need to be fed and be finally kept in clean water. The previous owner said they had not been fed in eight weeks. EIGHT!

I have been feeding them Canadian nightcrawlers (half a worm, split in half lengthwise, 2 times a day). They will need to be slowly reintroduced to food so that they do not vomit from over-eating. Their digestive systems need time to readjust to being fed normally and routinely. Live blackworms would work better at this point but I can't get them locally.

If you live in or near Southern Indiana and have experience caring for axolotls, please consider helping me find these babies a safe home.

I will upload pictures tonight when my boyfriend gets home and can help me.

I went to post on Facebook Axolotl-Aholics and the group has been taken down. That group was so amazing.

I want to feed Luna these freeze dried bloodworms but they float to the top where she doesn’t eat them... any ideas?

Raising night crawlers in a worm bin?

Posted: 15 Aug 2019 07:07 AM PDT

Anyone have any luck raising night crawlers in a worm bin? My babies do not like red wrigglers at all, but that's the only worm I've used for composting. I have not had any luck keeping night crawlers any where out side the fridge. Thoughts?

Any idea what this is and any suggestions on how to treat this poor guy? I’m thinking to try a tea bath later today.

Axolotl Discord

Posted: 14 Aug 2019 08:23 PM PDT

hey everyone, I thought it would be nice to have a discord for axolotls where we can even talk if we need further help and whatnot in the voice chats. It's still in the budding stages of being created, but if you are interested, feel free to join. https://discord.gg/xdjXmE

I have some unfortunate news about my little axolotl named Peanut

Posted: 14 Aug 2019 07:51 PM PDT

The other day he passed away. In retrospect there were some things we could have done long ago to prevent this from happening; and the worst part is, neither me nor my significant other knew that we were doing anything wrong.

The water Peanut was living in had:

pH: ~7.9

Ammonia: 0 ppm

Nitrite: >2 ppm

Nitrate: ~80 ppm

Horrible, I know. We were feeding our axolotls more or less everyday, maybe every other day, and the poop kept building up and up. We say one day that Peanut was not doing too well (impacted and looked thin) so we quarantined him and placed him in the fridge. He kept on getting weaker and weaker, and fungus began to grow on his gills. We made every effort to save him but to no avail.

We very recently upgraded to a 30 gallon tank (when all of this was going on - I broke the 20 gallon tank we had while cleaning it like an idiot) and the water quality is much better, ovbiously. Nitrates, nitrites are zero and the pH is around 8, on the high side I know, but we have some pH lowering solution if need be. However the ammonia was high, and come to find out, tap water in the city contain ammonia in relatively quantities. We have some Ammo Lock that we are going to use on the tank this week and hopefully it'll all work out for Toothless, our other axolotl.

Toothless is gonna be a good boy to have around. He is the cutest.

Injured Axolotl

Hello guys, I have a problem with one of my axolotls. A few weeks ago he hurted and his knee was broken. I was optimistic that all becomes well again, but the leg growd wrong together so it was bend permanent. Now the leg seems to be dead and its split up from the remaining part of the leg on knee. Only a small part of membrane keeps both parts together. I don't know what happend in the last week so I don't know if it loosed on its own, or if an other axo bited him.

Should I wait until the problem solved from their own, or should i help him and cut the dead part of the leg off ? And for what I have to pay attention for? I'm happy about all advices and tipps.

Greetings,
Thrandulin
