Goldfish with chronic floating problem- how should I resolve it?

Posted: 11 Aug 2019 05:55 PM PDT

I've had a pair of fantails for about two months. They're my first fancy goldfish! I feed Repashy Super Gold gel food as a staple. One has never had any floating issues, but the other has a slight positive buoyancy problem that gets much worse after feeding. I've also noticed that the floaty goldfish does have a little bit of a spinal kink, but it's not too obvious unless you look at it from above.

Is there anything I can do to curb this persistent floating issue or will it just be a recurring problem? Thanks for any advice!

How many goldfishes should be kept in a 40 gallon tank?

Posted: 11 Aug 2019 10:07 PM PDT

Currently I have a lone single tail common goldfish in a 40 gallon tank. I also have some nerite snails and plants in the same tank. The snails were added for passive algae clean up. This is what the tank and goldfish looks like.

I'm thinking of adding one or two more goldfishes, but I have a feeling that could end up overstocking the tank.

Looking forward to any suggestions.

Any kind of sand out there that won’t cloud aquarium water with orandas in it? Any other substrate goldfish safe that won’t cloud water?

Anyone try Seachem Flourite Black? Would this work? I'm looking for a substrate of sand that won't cloud water if orandas forage through it, or I'm looking for an alternative substrate that's big enough that an oranda can't swallow it.

My goldfish lost scales. Should I start worrying? Is it normal? I have this common goldfish and a commet in a 29G tank for 1 year and it never happened before. Is the water? Parasites?
