Hello friends. Me again! Checking in with the community to see if yall have any additions you'd like to see to this subreddit. I cleaned up the sidebar a bit (anything you'd like to see there?) and cleaned up the weekly quick asks thread as well to provide a tiny bit more info in the text box.

What else would you like to see!

After months of swimming up and down the corner my clownfish pair finally decided to take residence in one of the corals.

Confessions of a 75g reef tank owner

Posted: 11 Aug 2019 07:07 PM PDT

I'm writing this so it doesnt happen to you. I feel like such an idiot but it happens to the best of us, TLDR at the bottom

So I had a beautiful 55g tank that i had set up for about 2 years. It was finally established and all the corals were flourishing, SPS growing and coloring up nicely. All was great... except the pesky front/back dimension. What a pain in the ass it was to try and get medium/larger sized corals to fit inside that 12" space.

So i decided to take the plunge and upgrade to a 75G tank. Same size, just wider. No problem i thought, i've swapped tanks before. This time i decided to go all out. Extra T5 light supplement, custom made/designed sump, color coded plumbing, new return pump, and a new doser.... a new doser.... Oh boy how this haunts me still to this day. All gets set up, new sand and rocks as I planned on cycling this new tank as the old one was still up and running so i could transfer all my beautiful corals without a hiccup. I let this tank cycle for 3 months, all was well. Added a CUC and a few corals from my old tank.

Then came the big day, the transfer. I took it slow and moved everything piece by piece, fragging corals off my old rocks so I didnt get any old pests into the new tank (none that i knew of, just why not). Everything seemed to go great! All my corals and fish settled in nicely, i imagine my fish loved the new expanded swimming area. Of course, everything was still closed up as I had just moved them and I thought nothing of that. The next day, they are still closed. Ok, new environment, I'll give them some time. They stayed closed, day after day.

Eventually my LPS and SPS started receding! Oh no, what should I do! I test my water, every thing is exactly as I want it, nothing elevated, no spikes to indicate a cycle, nothing. Temperature is good, salinity is perfect. Maybe there is some stray electricity? I add a grounding probe to my tank. Nothing. Maybe there isn't enough backbone to my biological system? I add boosters, I add miracle mud (and aquaforest equivalent). Nothing. Tried changing my triton dosing supplements. Nothing. What in the world could it be!?!

Slowly over the weeks of torture, water change after water change, tweaking and playing with settings on everything, my corals started to die. First it was the corals, then my fish. I lost about 95% of whats in those 55g pictures. Lost all my fish but 2 (flame hawk, marine betta). I was defeated, but I did not give up, I kept up the tank as I didn't know what else i could do. Kept cleaning it, and giving it general care. I tried adding new corals several times, and a few fish, but nothing survived except about 5 corals, 2 fish, my lobster, and 2 shrimp. Now I was truly defeated.

This sorry state of my tank went on for about 1.5 years as I went to helicopter flight school. My time was occupied and after getting beaten down I wasn't motivated to use my little spare time on this tank. I kept going with it with the most minimum amount of work possible (I didnt even feed, but the fish are still here today!).

About 2 weeks ago, I sold my GHL doser as there were no corals to dose, and set up my old dosing pump (3 heads vs 4) and was planning on just using that. As I'm doing that, i'm disconnecting the hoses from the GHL to the dosing containers. I open the dosing containers (which are blue acrylic) to check the levels of the liquids... and oh boy... I find the instruction manual for the containers in with the liquids! Not just one manual, but 2 as I was using 2 separate containers. These little manuals were in a little clear plastic zip-loc baggie. This little baggie looks like it had simply melted. It has little burn marks on it as though some kind of mad science experiment happened between it and the liquid. All the ink from the pages was pooled at the bottom of the baggie which had holes all through it. Clearly my dosing liquids have been dosing ink and melted plastic into my system for the longest time.

I feel like such a fool, I shouldve cleaned those containers before using them, I wouldve noticed the manuals if i had. I shouldve noticed it when i topped up the dosing containers when the ran out 6 months ago. Such a little thing cost me thousands in corals and fish, and made me lose my fishy and coral friends, not to mention the amount of time i spent looking for what turned out to be 2 instruction manuals.

The thing i think we can all learn from my huge error is that we should not be skipping steps in our hobby because it can lead to much bigger issues. If i had cleaned the containers like i shouldve, I'd still have a huge beautiful coral garden, instead I'm stuck here doing tons of water changes, trying to figure out how to get rid of a bubble algae infestation and all the other algae that i've let infest my neglected tank.

Let this be a lesson to all! Hope my incident is an interesting read, I'm curious on peoples views.

TLDR: dosing containers contained their manual which the dosing liquids liquified and I was dosing instruction manual ink and plastic into my aquarium.

(flaired quality post cuz im a quality idiot)

Is this aiptasia? Had to film at night, hammer is too big during the day. It is tiny, white and located on left head stem. It has 8-10 tentacles and retracts in a hole when I poke at it. It's white in color.

Lighting a shallow reef.

Posted: 11 Aug 2019 08:06 PM PDT

Hey all,

I just bought a water box 80.4 which I just over a ft tall and is making the decision on lightning really difficult.

My stocking is limited to LPS, mushrooms and zooanthids so from what I have gathered I want lower light. I really like the look of T5 but want the shimmer and night cycle of leds so I was going to go the aquatic life T5 hybrid with 2 primes put in but I think that's still going to be too much light. Does anyone have any idea what lights would be best for this tank?

Thanks in advance.

Lighting question

Posted: 11 Aug 2019 06:38 PM PDT

I was just given the go ahead to upgrade my tank's lighting and now I'm exploring my options. If you had an unlimited budget, what LED system would you use to light a 4ft long, 20in deep (80g) tank?
