Did I just kill off all my snails? Posted: 12 Aug 2019 04:25 PM PDT Hey all! I think I did something so stupid, and I can't stop kicking myself.. I have a tank that I wanted to transform from just a regular 55 gallon community tank, to a river bed inspired tank for my bettas. Right now, it only contains a couple of guppies and 2 plecos, and my poor poor mystery/apple snails. To make the tank perfect for the plants I got, I bought a 25 liter bag of JBL Manado substrate, that was supposed to make my plants THRIVE. I switched substrates (leaving some of the old for the good bacteria) and it's killing my snails! Some little bits if substrate floats, and it seems to be getting inside of the snails "lids". I thought that the snails would sort it out themselves, but after the first day, one a few of them are moving around like they should. The ones that are floating or just sitting there, I've picked out of the tank and rinsed the substrate off from under their lids the best that I can, and they're retracting while I'm doing this- so I know that they're still alive. When I put them back in the tank, they're floating around, and slowly sticking back to the sides of the tank, and they have their little breathing tubes up to the surface, so I know they're getting air - but I'm worried sick about them!!! Is there anything else I can do for my buddies? The floating bits of substrate are slowly sinking to the bottom, and there is not much left floating, so that's taken care of - but is there anything else I can do? Please help me with tips and ideas to save them? (I am a worry wart, so maybe this is just my mommy-panic, but I'd hate to see them die on me now that I've finally gotten a hold of them. They're hard to find in my country.) [link] [comments] |
