Weekly quick asks thread - June 14, 2019

Posted: 14 Jun 2019 06:15 AM PDT

Here is the place to post questions about pest ID, coral/fish ID, your cycle, or any other questions that generally wouldn't start up a conversation. If you have an interesting or unique question please create a new thread so everyone can discuss it in length!

These are some great resources for ID's of pests/algae.

Tank update

Posted: 14 Jun 2019 04:25 PM PDT

One year on and I'm starting to crave a bigger freshwater and Saltwater tank.

Posted: 14 Jun 2019 10:56 PM PDT

I just finished hooking this thing up but it came with a remineralizer cartridge and I have no idea what that is or if I should use it. Any thoughts?

It’s time for some water

Posted: 14 Jun 2019 04:04 PM PDT

Can anybody identify this multi-tentacle creature? Picture taken in 2012, when my tank was about a year old. One day, I noticed quite a few tentacles coming out from under a rock. Underneath? The most horrific thing I have seen in an aquarium. We put it in cold water for weeks and it survived.

Zoas shrinking and withering?

Posted: 14 Jun 2019 08:06 PM PDT

So was wondering what causes this in zoas? Its happening to my bowsers and rainbow incinerators. Rainbows way worse and have actually lost a polyp and have seen one slowly spit out a black bubble.

Did a water change just incase its water quality but was wondering what could have caused this?

New to the hobby and a little overwhelmed

Posted: 14 Jun 2019 06:57 PM PDT

I have always wanted to set up a saltwater aquarium, but was always hesitant due to the amount of work I always heard they could be. A few weeks ago I went to my LFS to look around, and ended up talking to an employee there who gave me the confidence to start a tank up. I am aiming for only a few smaller fish, and mostly soft coral.

In that following week with minimal research I go out and start getting supplies (first mistake). Here is what I got.

Marine land 60 gallon long - Petsm art

Narrow particle board stand that came with it

Cascade 1000 Canister Filter

All other general supplies to get it going - Heater, lights, wave maker, live rock (found out what aiptasia and Majano's were, live sand, etc.

I started really doing a lot more research after I had already set the tank up. Majority of the community recommends using a sump and skimmer, but with this stand I have no room for one. I have also seen some set ups my size that just use a HOB filter, skimmer, or canister. I really feel like i could of just used my money more wisely, but I am sort of stuck with what i have for now.

I am currently in 3rd week of cycling tank, and from the looks of everything it appears I am not even getting out of the ammonia stage. It seems to be stuck on 0.25 ppm for the past week or so. I really want to use this as a stepping stone to see how much I like the hobby. Any helpful beginner tips are appreciated.

PLEASE HELP, FIREFISH IN TROUBLE

Posted: 14 Jun 2019 03:59 PM PDT

In y’alls experience, are acans particularly susceptible to chemical warfare in the absence of carbon?

Posted: 14 Jun 2019 02:15 PM PDT

I haven't run any sort of filtration on my tank in about four months, I have a VERY populated mixed reef with a majority being mushrooms. Beforehand I was pretty bad at replacing the media anyways. Like a month into no filtration my three acan frags stopped expanding and you could basically always see the purple between heads (one recovered after like two or three weeks), and over the course of the last week the other two have finally started receding. All my other corals, Montis, shrooms, digitatas, chalices, and anemones seem to be doing pretty well, and I have dipped the acans and failed to find any pests on them. I am going to throw a filter with some carbon on today. I was just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences with acans?

Lost both long nose butterfly fish and kole tang in one week

Posted: 14 Jun 2019 01:56 PM PDT

Those were both the inhabitants of the tank and while the kole tang seemed a bit pale he was lively and butterfly fish seemed fine before he seemed to die without cause I've tested the water it was fine Ammonia:0 Nitrite:0 Nitrate:0 Ph:8.0 Phosphate:.25 I made sure the tank had cycled and did a water change after the butterfly fish had died and tested the water before that with the same results if anyone has any recommendations as to why this may have happened it's a 55 gallon aswell and

Cycled my tank with Bio-spira. A week in, it appears to have cycled my tank in 2 days. Here are the week's parameters. This is an update to another post. Just sharing my experience. If this successfully cycled my tank, what other obstacles do I have because of my start-up method?

Posted: 14 Jun 2019 09:59 AM PDT

About a week ago I made a post about cycling my tank with Bio-Spira, for details on tank and the proceedure I used, read that post. I was met with a bunch of downvotes and comments saying I was going to kill everything in my tank in a couple of days. (Although I have a developed tank to move them too if it didn't work, so no dead animals would have ever happened) I stocked far heavier than I would have liked due to kids, wife, and a lack of self-control. I ended up adding 4x the required dose on the initial day, but after about a week of adding more stock with everything converting to nitrates, I feel comfortable claiming that Bio-Spira cycled my tank 1-2 days. I logged a lot of my parameters into Aquarium Note, so here is the data:

Tank: 65 Gallon, 70lbs of dead rock, 10 lbs of live rock from local fish store. 2 inch Live Sand Bed, Sump/Filter Sock

Initial Stock: Ocellaris Clownfish, Black Longspine Urchin, Neon Doddyback, Coral Banded Shrimp, Racoonface Butterfly, Fire Shrimp, 3 Hermit Crabs, 2 Tubo Snails

Feeding: Brine Shrimp, Marine Flakes, Supplemental Algea for CUC until rock develops.

Second Stock: Large Carpet anenome, Tomato Clown, Bubble tip anenome.

Ammonia remains 0, had a small nitrite spike that quickly converted to nitrates after second stock. Everything looks super happy. Just sharing my experience, go ahead and tell me I'm stupid.
