Here is the place to post questions about pest ID, coral/fish ID, your cycle, or any other questions that generally wouldn't start up a conversation. If you have an interesting or unique question please create a new thread so everyone can discuss it in length!

These are some great resources for ID's of pests/algae.

Went to the Berlin aquarium and it was one of the best collections of healthy reefs I’ve ever seen.

Non-ReefTanker with a question about a gift for a friend. Please help?

Posted: 07 Jun 2019 07:15 PM PDT

Let me preface this by saying I know next to nothing about reef tanks or the hobby of maintaining one. I have a friend in Wisconsin who was stoked about coming down to Florida to stay with me for a week this summer so her and her husband could go collect stuff for their tanks. Unfortunately, they had some things come up and can't make the trip. They were both disappointed.

I have to mail them a box with one item in it and I thought it would be neat to send them some shells and whatnot off of the beach and sandbars. So I enlisted the help of my niece and nephew and collected a 5 gallon bucket full of various shells, sand dollars, starfish, etc.

My question is would and can you use natural shells and such collected from the beach in a reef tank?

EDIT: Photos of their tanks...

Bought this damaged "Tonga" scoly for $50. I dipped it, then cleaned the algae off the exposed skeleton and rock and put it in my tank. I've fed it some small LPS pellets which it took, as it luckily still has a mouth. It's in a lower light and lower flow area. We'll see if it comes back!
