Just bought a new house and I have some questions about the 500 Gal koi pond i inherited. Posted: 07 Jun 2019 10:04 PM PDT | So I inherited a koi pond at the house i just purchased and did a little research on how to upkeep a koi pond and what to monitor etc. Ive seen some beautiful ponds online with vibrant surroundings and plants and crystal clear water. Initially the pond was a 500 gal hole in the ground with no rock at the bottom, no plants, murky green water, and a small waterfall. I decided to add a few plants, a flat stone stack in the middle for the fish to swim around/hide. Sometimes i can get the water crystal clear but then a few days later its back to absolutely green again... Was wondering if anyone had some insight on what i should do or try to get this water to clear and stay clear. A couple weeks ago I cleaned my bio filter, covered it with a filter pad bacterial inoculant gel and installed a new UV bulb in the filter pump. I am at a good KH of about 125 ppm, a good GH at 200 ppm, my nitrite levels are very close to 0 ppm, ammonia is very close to 0 ppm. Only issue i see is I'm having pH fluctuations from around 7.5 in the am to 9+ in the evening when I get home from work. The phosphate level looks to be a tad high to at around 0.5 to 1 ppm. I use the api test kit to do all my tests. Is it the pH? Phosphate? The bottom of the pond seems to have dead algae (or dirt?) that accumulated at the bottom.. Where should i start to get this bad boy looking squeaky clean. I also noticed algae quickly grows on the rocks of the water fall. Is this bad? I live in Florida and it is summer so maybe algae and murky water is a hassle to fight off. I apologize if I'm rambling on here but any advice or help would be much appreciated. Waterfall with green algae Murky Green Water This is where it all started when I moved in :/ SOS submitted by /u/andrewa44 [link] [comments] | |
