| So I’m currently cycling a freshwater tank Posted: 17 May 2019 07:25 PM PDT It's 3 gallons, lights, filter, lots of plants. I was planning on putting a betta in it (slightly small tank, yes I know) but the betta fish sub is adamant that a betta absolutely cannot go in a 3gal. I'm considering shrimp as an alternative. Are freshwater shrimp easy to keep? My only experience with any sort of aquarium keeping other than a small fishbowl was keeping saltwater barnacles for a research project, but those are easy. I study biology and marine science, so I have some theoretical background in how marine systems function, but lack knowledge on freshwater as well as the hobby in general. [link] [comments] | ||

| Interbreeding between different shrimpers Posted: 17 May 2019 02:12 PM PDT Can I keep blue velvet shrimp in the same tank as orange bee shrimp, or will they interbreed? I don't mind setting up a separate tank if that's the case, so I'm just wondering. Thanks!!! [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 17 May 2019 02:06 PM PDT TLDR: How quickly can the water hardness of a tank be changed without worrying about harming the shrimp? So, I screwed up. I have a well established 2.5 gallon tank, home to a betta for about two years until I lost him to an extended power outage during the winter (50 degrees in the house!) So I added a few more plants and let the tank sit for a while. Did nitrate, nitrite and ammonia tests. Everything looked good, so I headed to my LFS to find some new inhabitants. There I saw they had some blues neos (labeled sapphires, though I know the naming can be unreliable). I got four, including two berried ladies. Drip acclimated them for over two hours. Put them in the tank - they seemed fine for a couple days. Then I lost one. Next day another. The next day one shrimp molted, and I thought that was a good sign, but one more day and he was dead. I had a suspicion what the problem might be. Got a water hardness test kit. The GH was an astonishing 23! No wonder I was having die offs. PH was also a little high. I tested the tap and it's "only" a GH of 10. Obviously I hadn't been thinking when topping off evaporated water with tap all the time, and the occasional ferts probably only made it worse. So, I've had one berried female left and she's survived two weeks. I've been taking out probably a cup and a half of water and replacing it with distilled, lowering the GH by about 0.75 each day. So far it's just down to 19. This morning the remaining shrimp was lacking eggs; don't know if they hatched or she just gave up. I want to make sure any babies survive, which I doubt they will with the GH still so high. Any recommendations on how quickly I can safely lower the GH without shocking everyone in the tank?
