Here is the place to post questions about pest ID, coral/fish ID, your cycle, or any other questions that generally wouldn't start up a conversation. If you have an interesting or unique question please create a new thread so everyone can discuss it in length!

These are some great resources for ID's of pests/algae.

Update on Kid Standing in Tanks

Update on Kid Standing in Tanks

I posted earlier about my (very autistic) daughter literally climbing into two of my tanks and standing in the sand. She was so good at getting inside one of them that she could do it in about 30 seconds from the couch. It got to the point where when we were going to the bathroom (that is literally attached to the same room), she would watch us and start getting up as we closed the door!

Anyways, I removed the one she got into the easiest yesterday morning. I bought a 125G and had it installed Wednesday. I have enough space to put the other tank in here as well if and when our barrier we built breaks.

New 125G

I went for a higher up and longer tank. There is a canopy, and this is in an area of the house that was used for mostly storage until now. There is a lock on the door, and I will install locks on the cabinets.

The sump and plumbing after setup

I did not do the plumbing. On Tuesday morning my wife texted me that my daughter got in the tank again, and I realized I had to act fast. I took the rest of the day off, in addition to Wednesday and Thursday. I went and bought 2 additional 44G trash containers with dollies for salt water mixing (I already have 1) and another 34G container with dolly for making water (already had 1). I started making water immediately because I had 0G on hand (had just done water change).

I cleared out the room, took stuff to the dump, etc for rest of day. I went to Pure Reef here in Alpharetta, GA (I am an unpaid spokesman!) right around the time they opened and said I had a problem. They had met my daughter and were not surprised. We have to really contain her when we take her there because she goes nuts over fish.

Luckily, this setup was on sale. I bought the largest sump they had as well. They had someone on staff willing to setup the plumbing for a fee and if I went to get the parts across the street (Home Depot).

I took advantage of the tank switch to make some hard decisions. I got rid of these ugly palys I had growing everywhere and got rid of a lot of the GSP rock. The coral is mostly in other tanks, but there was not much coral in there to begin with. I also covered the bottom with egg crate prior to putting the rock in, and then put in enough sand to cover the egg crate.

Everyone had been saying not to have too much sand and with the number of tanks I own, I have two hypotheses on sand:

  1. Very little or some is easy to manage
  2. Medium amount is hard to manage
  3. A ton is easy to manage.

I have one tank that has #3 because I was going to put a fish that needed deep sand. I ended up with about 7 inches in places. That tank has 0 algae. But the tanks that have #2 are a pain. I have one tank that is #1 that is easy to manage. I'm going with #1.

What’s your favorite online coral shop?

Posted: 17 May 2019 07:23 PM PDT

Since my LFS has been getting meh corals I have started looking online for decent places to get corals (mainly SPS).

It made me wonder what is everyone's favorite online coral shops? Looking for decent selection, low prices, minimal pests, healthy livestock, etc...

Im currently cycling dry rock in a brute container. Would adding bioballs from my established reef speed up the cycle?

[Help] feeding, fat fish

Posted: 17 May 2019 04:16 PM PDT

So, let me preface this with I have no alage low to no phosphates and all other numbers are in check. However I was just wonder the concensus on feeding fat fish. I don't over feed or feed cheap food. I feed the fish here and there in mornings (3 times a week or so) and every night in the evening. I feed Mysis, reef frenzy, live baby brine ocassionly and rarely pellet. I only feed till they stop or slow down where I think they won't be able to eat what's left in the tank.

My only concern is if it's possible to just make my fish too fat. Like I said don't have problems with levels or algae. But the plump little pigs seem to be putting on some healthy pot bellies. I'm glad they are fat and happy but I don't want to negatively effect their health.

60 total gallons 40 display stocked with:

Chalk bass

Mccoskers flasher

Starry blenny

Clown goby

Spotted dragonet

Thanks for any and all help.

75 tempered

Posted: 17 May 2019 08:25 AM PDT

I remember buying a 75 from a petco that was closing out for like 130 maybe. I wanted it to keep discus, then i switched to saltwater in the 30 gallon, and was able to drill it and have all the bells and whistle on it, problem is i want to have the 75 running or get rid of it. I cant drill it since its tempered and dont want to mess with a hang on the back overflow. Are there non tempered 75 gallons that are made by aqueon? I purchased the aquarium without realizing the problem but now regret it. And this was like 2 years ago.
