[Help] planning for a first tank.

Posted: 18 May 2019 03:50 PM PDT

Hello there.

After years (litteraly) of intel gathering, looking in awe at your tanks, and waiting for the good time, I'm ready to go foward and seriously budget a tank of my own.

I've got several questions regarding that, some of which I have seen contradicting answers online, some of which I haven't found an answer.

those questions can be sumarised in two main ones.
While budget planning, should I go "High volume/Mid End rig" or should I go for the High end skimmer/lights/pumps (etc), and reduce my tank size accordingly to fit inside a budget?

My concerns here are on both issues: I'd prefer if I could keep my rig without throwing half of it away in upgrade in the next few years, but I'm also afraid regarding tank size that, by going smaller, I'll have a harder time regulating everything, as it will be my first tank.

A follow up on that is regarding the "all-in-one" tanks available, I'm talking particulary on the red sea max series. By going all in one, I believe i'll prevent issues regarding tank building, as i'll have enough to worry as it is. But i've read a lot of people either upgrading the rig on the max series (skimmer for example) or saying that lights/pumps are subpar (albeit on older models).

An all in one solution would also have the huge advantage of making a budget a hell of a lot easier, as I would not be tempted to throw in a 100€ more "just for an upgrade on this piece". But if the solution is way more expensive than individual construction, or if I'll need to replace parts in order to have a nice set up, those solutions won't do.

So question is, what do you guys think about those?

to give you an idea of where I'm at budget wise, I was looking into the S500/S650 from red reef. I'll need to add to that an osmoser, heating group for parts from what i understood, dry rocks, salt, and some bacterial seeding solution. I was planning to go from a full dry rock setup, as I would control more efficiently hichhickers with that launch, and the seeding period+cycling of the tank would stagger the other expenses for me to digest the initial one.

What do you guys think? I'm afraid I went everywhere trying to explain my questions, but I do hope I'm clear enough for you do help me.

Thanks for your time
a newbie

What to do with spare biocube?

Posted: 18 May 2019 02:43 PM PDT

I upgraded from a biocube 32 to a reefer 170 because I wanted more flexibility in lighting and filtration. I'm planning on keeping the biocube around for experimentation/messing around. Maybe take the hood off and grow some frags. Maybe a refugium to harvest live pods.

Anyone have any suggestions for a "spare tank"?

After months of prying I convinced my parents to let me get a 125 gallon tank. The Lfs is gonna bring it in in 3 weeks since that's when school ends. I'm starting to work out the specifics and I know I shouldn't think about stock yet but I cant resist. Here's what I have so far.

1 purple tang 1 powder blue tang 1 white tail bristle tooth tang 1 regal anglefish 2 purple dartfish 2 mandarins 2 coral beauty angels 2 bangii cardinals 2 ocellaris clownfish A few cleaner shrimp and fire shrimp Havent worked out the rest of the inverts yet Any suggestions?

More than 3 clowns in a tank

Posted: 18 May 2019 12:19 PM PDT

I have a 125 G tank with 1 clown in it now, and also have a biocube with 2 baby storm clowns in it. Could I move the 2 clowns into the 125? Or would this be trouble with the single clown that is in that tank ??

Lighting questions

Posted: 18 May 2019 05:59 AM PDT

Hey guys. Im looking for some light settings!

I've got 2 vipar spectras on my 90 gallon.

It's fully cycle (5 weeks).

I have 2 small clowns, a cleaner shrimp, 4 scarlet hermits and 5 tronchus snails.

Basically I'm looking for what my light times should be.

Right now, my blues come on at 1pm and my whites come on at 3pm.

Then my whites go off at 9pm and my blues at 11pm.

I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong, or if anyone has any other opinions.

Also, my clowns are about 2 inches long. How often should I feed them? I've read that 1/4 of a cube is good for the day at one time. But I have my questions.

THANKS!
