Almost gassed my fish to death for the first time

Posted: 14 May 2019 07:51 PM PDT

Yesterday near the end of my photoperiod, I realized that when I'd tried to slightly increase the CO2 the previous day, I'd slightly decreased it instead. I turned the CO2 up a little, and it seemed fine.

Today, mid-photoperiod, I glance at my tank and see the fish near the top, I assume begging for food. I fed them and went to get a drink so I could watch them eat.

I came back and noticed my assassin snail was at the top of the glass, which was odd for daytime. Then I realized the fish weren't eating or begging, but gasping for air. The CO2 indicator was bright yellow. Turned off the CO2, added a bubbler, increased the surface skimmer, and they all recovered within an hour, but man was it scary.

PSA: Monitor your indicator often. Don't get bleach in your indicator, get lazy about replacing the fluid, get out of the habit of checking your indicator, and suffocate all your pets.

What species are these? Looks like three different types. Salvinia minima? Salvinia cucullata?
