So happy to have my sunshine back

My first “not so baby” shrimp born and raised in my tank. I believe that I have 3 different “generations” so far. Anyone know the frequency that red cherries can reproduce?

First RCS tank!!! Suggestions welcome and what do on plants

Posted: 14 May 2019 10:42 PM PDT

Here it is all cycled and set up... https://i.imgur.com/q0FVsx8.jpg

There are 10 RCS so far, 1 came berried from Petco today, and I've got another 15 on mail-order (got antsy lol).

Here's the thing. No fish. No CO2. No Walstad. What do I do about shrimp safe fertilizer for these plants? I have some root tabs from Aquarium Co-op but am afraid of killing the shrimpies... I don't even know if the plants I have will need more fert than the leftover shrimp food?

Tried to pick easy / low light plants. Frogbit, duckweed, floating unidentified moss balls that look like Java moss, Christmas moss and a marimo ball on the bottom. And some floating Cabomba I'll probably take out and put in my Val tank because I just read it needs higher lighting.

Cholla wood still floating at the top, Indian almond leaf up there too. Probably might add some cool snails if they don't show up magically.

What else should I put to make the shrimpies happy? Any suggestions on fert or experiences with root tabs and shrimp?

Thanks everyone!!

Would I need to buy food specifically for baby shrimp if my tank is matured already?

Posted: 15 May 2019 01:48 AM PDT

I have green and brown algae growing on the rocks, plants, and glass that is easily accessible to baby shrimp with no predatory fish around, only oto catfish. Do I still need to buy powered food for the babies or should they be fine with just algae?

Artificially hatching shrimp eggs — need advice

Posted: 14 May 2019 06:39 PM PDT

First time I've had a berried female die :-(

I've made an egg tumbler using the plastic tube from a sponge filter with mesh on both ends, with an airline/pump circulating water through the tumbler. I feel confident that I've done this part correctly.

What I'm unsure about is whether I should keep the tumbler running in the shrimp tank, or if I should run it in a container of tank water to which I've added a drop of methylene blue (antifungal). Right now I've got it in the methylene container. Is the MB necessary to keep the eggs from fungusing? Will it hurt the shrimplets if they do end up hatching? Ugh idk, I lost three shrimp today and I'm sad. The mama who died was pretty and I don't wanna fail her little ones.

PH dropped, please help!

Posted: 14 May 2019 01:11 PM PDT

Hello everyone,

I've had a shrimp tank running for roughly 6 months now. 20 gallon, very heavily planted, no detectable ammonia, nitrites or nitrates. Stocking is god knows how many shrimps and snails. Things have been pretty stable since day 1 and never really had any issues. I noticed I had a dead nerite snail the other day so I checked my parameters just to be safe and everything looked good exceptd my PH had dropped to 6 or lower.

PH of my tap water is in the 7.5 range. I don't change the water on my shrimp tank, only top ups so I'm wondering if the rather large piece of driftwood has been slowly lowering the PH of the water (I'll be honest, I don't remember the last time I checked my PH). My question is: What is the best way to slowly raise the PH back up? I've read somewhere that adding crushed coral can do this but I'm not sure how fast it will take effect. Obviously, I don't want any change swings in PH. It doesn't seem to be bothering the shrimp that much but it's really on the low side...

Should I also be checking anything else? KH?

Thanks for any help!!

Question for anyone using a Oxydator.

Posted: 14 May 2019 07:00 PM PDT

What is the difference between using the 3, 6, or 12% hydrogen peroxide? Asking because I am planning on making a DIY one and would like to know which H2O2 concentration I should use.

Edit: Or is there any Söchting alternative out there because the german one is just ridiculously overpriced
