Jarrariums - Beginning of week 3, so far so good. The little round leaves aren't too happy so I added a small Ikea light. But now I've noticed about a million tiny snails! How to eradicate most without touching?

Cycling question — high ammonia

Posted: 21 May 2019 08:45 AM PDT

Hello! Looking for some advice on cycling a 2G planted jar that I set up about 2.5 weeks ago. Currently it has a ton of hornwort, some salvinia minima, a bit of dwarf hair grass and some java moss. There are also a ton of pond snails that came in on the hornwort. Eventually I'm looking to take out the pond snails with an assassin snail and perhaps add a couple of RCS.

However, I'm a bit confused about cycling. Here are my current test results:

pH 7.0

Ammonia 0.50 ppm

Nitrite 0 ppm

Nitrate 5.0 ppm

The ammonia went up since my last reading a week ago, presumably because of decomposing plant matter the bioload from the snails (?). Nitrites and nitrates have stayed the same. The nitrates suggest there's something in there converting the nitrites, but how can I bring down the ammonia?

Picked up a juvenile horseshoe crab, I should probably throw him back though.

Algae boom in only one of three jarrariums under the same light

Posted: 20 May 2019 06:37 PM PDT

Hello! I have three jarrariums of various sizes running under a pretty bright LED lamp for 5.5hrs a day. One of the jarrariums, a 1gal bowl, is experiencing a huge algae boom that none of the others are even showing signs of. The algae is like a light brown, rusty color, and is forming like a cloud around the ground plants. There's a bunch of bladder/pond? snail kids in there and while they are munching on it, it's spreading faster than they can handle it. Any idea why only one is getting this algae problem? The substrate in all 3 is the same, the only notable difference is that there's a crypt in the one with algae. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Best Pond Plants for Jarrariums?

Posted: 20 May 2019 11:33 AM PDT

At the moment I have some pink ramshorn snails in my closed jarrarium with hornwort. The only issue is that the hornwort grows very fast and the snails don't eat it.

I'm curious if I would be a good idea to take it out and add water hyacinth or water lettuce instead?

Any help much appreciated! Thanks!

Purple soil, black slime and film?

Purple soil, black slime and film?

I set up my jarrarium ~7 months ago using the Walstad method. Everything was humming along great. Clear water, happy snails. I do 3/4 water changes every other week. But a month ago, it started to take a turn for the worse. I believe that this is because indoor temperatures went from 70F to 79F. My plants (Java fern and Anubius) are looking defoliated and have a black slime on them. The soil/sand has green and purple (see picture). And a blueish film gathers on the top. I've already taken the snails out of the jar, and am starting it over from scratch. Does anyone have opinions on what these symptoms suggest? Thanks!
